Sounds like an awesome way for BMW service departments to make money. Very German. Make it as complex as possible. It's why they lost the war (twice).

When I posted this I was somewhat skeptical like Brain hence the turbonator comment. Hell I could reorganize the geometric shapes and patent a dash mounted fan. Nonetheless i found the regenerative nature (alternator function) of the turbo interesting.

Whatever happened to Garrett's patent on the same thing?
What I see that's different is the presence of the clutches. Look at high load condition. The motor acts as an alternator to charge the battery and prevent over-speed. Now what happens when said German Bahn Burner has been running flat out for a while, the battery is fully charged, and the car has minimal electric load? How do you prevent over-speed now, without a wastegate? |

I think you're right Jason. We obviously need to add a brake. There needs to be more heat to promote lack of longevity and keep those BMW service departments going.
There are things I love about German cars, but their propensity for complexity isn't one of them. |
