BMW Unveils their new Bi-Turbo V8

Interesting design, i think. Might make exhaust routing a bit difficult, and heat dissipation could be an issue, but i love design ideas that challenge the norm, and this certainly qualifies.

I like the direct injection...

+1.

Never seen it pictured like that.

Thanks!

Loki047 12-31-2007 12:38 AM

I enjoy the pictures. But seems fancy just to be fancy (cept for the direct injection.

That makes alot of sence tho, The exhaust goes right into the turbos (heat efficenty ++!), There is little charge pipeing (not much air to compress), plus DI. As long as you could keep heat soak out of the block right under the turbos (turbo blankets?) and heat off the hood (heat shields), I think that could work wonderfully.

did you all miss the tiny A/W intercoolers?

and what's with auto makers and the large ass cats in places where no one wants them.

oh, i noticed them. ;)

I'm really impressed at how much technology they've managed to compress into such a small footprint.

I want to see one of these in an FD RX7.

thebeerbaron 12-31-2007 01:33 AM

those cylinder walls in the 3rd and onward pics leave a lot to be desired....

seriously, this is going to be a car you'll only want to own on-lease and under warranty. ze germans may be creative with the packaging, but you can bet there's going to be a small, brittle $0.02 plastic bit hidden in the valley of that V which will inevitably and catastrophically fail. i don't want to begin counting the number of hours it would take to access it.

still, if i weren't paying the bills, i'd take it for a nice spin :)

Do BMW use W/I intercoolers in the current twin turbo I6 in the 335i too?

cardriverx 12-31-2007 01:59 AM

I think its A/A

hrk 12-31-2007 10:25 AM

Why is the air filter wrapped around catalytic converter?

lol, i think you're looking at a flex joint

Yeah put look at the pressure drop through the exhaust manifold, thats something i wouldn't purposely design.

No we saw em, nothing innovative or cool there.

l_bader 12-31-2007 10:39 AM

Considering how low the oil pump is, I wonder what the overall height is...

hustler 12-31-2007 10:55 AM

yeah, I'll pass on working on that.
