Bought Used Compressor: Ticking Time Bomb?

Hey shitlords,
Today I bought a used air compressor on craigslist for the price of a left handed tranny hooker handy-J (i.e. $100). It seemed to be in working order so I figured I would fix it up and have a 20 gallon portable compressor for whatever. Heres the CL pic Attachment 233459 Started tearing it down (dem miata daiseys doe) Attachment 233460 hit it with some rattle can enamel Attachment 233461 starting to look pretty fresh Attachment 233462 So here is the point of the thread. After painting the tank, I decided to have a look inside to check for rust. Its very humid here, any compressor Ive owned has accumulated water quickly requiring them to be drained frequently. So I assumed I would find some amount of surface rust. Here is what I see Attachment 233463 Attachment 233464 So there seems to be very little surface rust, but there seems to be a fair bit of flaky rust. Flaky rust = metal lost = gonna blow the fuck up? yes? I dont want this to happen https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1427084852 Just curious what you guys think. |
It might be fine, but I don't know if I would sleep well knowing that rust was there.

I'm not sure how rust could cause an explosion. Wouldn't it just leak? I'm in a similar situation and wondered the same.

All steel tanks have rust to some degree. If you're really worried about it, hydro test it.
Gas tank repair kits would take care of that, too. |
Quit being a pussy. All the money you saved by buying a sketchy piece of shit off CL will more than cover your medical bills when it inevitably pummels your testicles with shrapnel.

Legit concern.
Relevant thread: Free Compressor Are you hispanic? Hispanic Car Wash Supervisor Died When an Air Tank Exploded I've seen some larger oil-less all-in-ones with bad motors/pumps for cheap on CL. Save your parts and grab one of those for the tank. Then make your new smoker. ;) |
