Bought yet another toy (Ruger 10/22)

Bought it at a pawn shop for $304 out the door. It has a Simmons 3-9x50 scope and a flash suppressor on it. Came with a soft case and sling. I bought a Winchester 9-13" bipod ($40) from Walmart as well as a package with studs and stuff in it ($10?) to use to attach the bipod. Will take it out tomorrow to see how it shoots. It looks like someone used a pipe wrench or something on the barrel between the rear sight and breach block (right under the scope). You probably wouldn't notice it if I didn't point it out. Hopefully I can clean it up a bit (at least take out the high spots).

It is MUCH nicer looking in person than in the picture!

That's weird, 'cause the 10/22 doesn't have a threaded barrel/receiver; can't think of any reason why someone would need to do that. If it was me I would just knock it down with a file and some cold blue and not worry about the areas below the surface.

Nice price though, especially with the nice laminated stock! Is the muzzle threaded (for the useless brake)? If so I would put a suppressor on it and crank that puppy. Otherwise I'd ditch it and leave the muzzle clean.

I run mine without the barrel band, BTW.

+1 on the suppressor, very fun and super quiet on a .22.

The ruger 10/22 is one of the coolest rifles to own. I had a base model 10/22 a few years back, but now I have a 10/22T. It has a laminated stock and a hammer forged stainless steel target barrel. I have a Simmons 3-9x40 scope on it, and am very pleased. I bought a 30 round clip I think at cabela's for it. It jams sometimes, but I am gonna blame the ammo and the lack of cleaning by me. There are way too many accessories for the 10/22, you could literally own 20 of em and they would all be different.

You don't use "clips" on a 10-22, you use "magazines".

This is a clip:

Yeah, I wish the barrel was threaded! At some time it will be so it and my Walther P22 can share a suppressor. I'm not sure how I can explain to the wife that I really really need to spend $500 on it but I am working on excuses now. I just did a tranny swap last night on the Geo (hoping for 60+ MPG now) so I will kill two birds with one stone and drive to the range this morning. I need to get it sighted in since some friends and I are going to do some shooting on Friday.

Definitely get the suppressor. The TAC-65 is cheap and can be fully disassembled. I have one that I share between my P22 and 10/22. Honestly, I rarely shoot any of my other stuff anymore besides the .22s and a suppressed P226. a .22 suppressor is the best $260 (+$200 to the BATFE) you can spend.

I grew up shooting with a friend that had a nickle&black Ruger like that. I'd swap my Marlin with him as much as possible. Great...great guns.

God. Not another clips vs magazine lesson!

Buy some 50 round bananas, a loader and an activator. Hold the Ruger with your left hand, turn the activator with the right. 3 or 4 rounds per revolution of the handle depending on the brand. You can run through 50 rounds in about 5 seconds. One of life's guilty pleasures and emulates a full auto on the cheap.

Note the complete lack of the use of the words magazine or clip to avoid angering the language police.

MAGAZINE, sorry. I know the difference. My SKS used "stripper clips" my AR-15 uses "magazines". BTW, what rifle are the pictured "clips" from, smartass? Hint "it's a .30 cal rifle used in WWII".

Which brands of each do you use? I definitely want to buy a loader!

I bought a plastic hotlips 25 round magazine today. It fits a little loose but I only had 2 jam in 100 rounds (not bad for $20).

10-22 is a fun, rugged little gun. I had one years ago, that was shot out before I got it (looked like someone had tried to clean the barrel with a drill bit), and I put at least another 12 thousand rounds through it. Barely any rifling left in the thing when I got rid of it. Still shot well, although accuracy suffered a bit by then.

Dude, way too easy :). M1 Garand. To be fair though, I'm a FFL and firearms are probably my biggest hobby.

I haven't the slightest idea what brand the mags are unfortunately. They are likely 20 years old by now so even if I did know it wouldn't help much today. Just some all plastic smoke colored mags. Duct taped together for 100 rounds of goodness. I can't find my loader anymore. That's why I say you have to buy one. Taking 10 minutes to load 100 rounds and 10 seconds to shoot them isn't any fun. It's like skiing with a REALLY slow ski lift with long lines of people.

i have one in all black. mine is pretty damn accurate without touching anything. I've also got the 25 round banana clips and a 50 round teardrop drum. they are in plastic which with somes round have been problematic. great for wasting off hundreds or thousands of rounds on the cheap.

Robert -

Congrats on the new addition.

Now that I have (a) rejoined the workforce and (b) have a couple of paychecks in the bank (to make up for the few months of zero paychecks), I am looking at buying toys again.

The problem is the wife is looking at new flooring for the house. 2600 sqft of hardwood and tile will not come cheaply, lending itself to further delaying some of the acquisitions...

My 1022

Fajen Thumbhole sporter stock
cheap-o Tasco optics
.920 Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel
volquartsen trigger/hammer/sear/bolt release

Love this baby, drive tacks from about 75 yards all day with no problem, not bad for a little 1022. First rifle I really built, started when I got the brand new base 1022 for my 12th (I think) birthday.

rmcelwee 08-14-2009 09:16 PM

We shot around 600 rounds through it this morning. I ordered three TI 25 round magazines, a reloader, and the 4 piece "upgrade" kit (larger mag ejector, buffer, etc) this morning as well. Only had the gun 2 days and I have already spent $150+ on accessories <G>.
