Default Website software

For you guys that are into your own .com's, what software are you using? And on a scale from 1-10 how hard is it to use?

Years ago I had an amateur site for myself, mainly to goof around with and I used frontpage. This time around I'm looking to actually make something professional, or at least as best I can....lol.

Just got the .com and .net and need to get going on it. I read somewhere in the agreement that I needed to have a certain % uploaded within 30 days of today, or they can yank my .com from me.

Thanks bro's!

You could try Microsoft Visual Web Developer (Express). You can build a site with practically no coding if you want, though I wouldn't recommend this (just for the sake of learning), but VWD could make it easy for you to get something up quickly while you're learning.

What kind of stuff are you doing? If it's just some pages to show mods on the car, etc., you could go old skool and use notepad to help you get things down (no autocomplete, lol). If you're looking to host dynamic content, user accounts, submissions, etc, you need to look into PHP, ASP, and MySQL or SQL Server Express in addition to HTML/CSS and JavaScript.

I totally forgot about this thread :stoned:

Looking to make a page with basically info, videos, and pictures (not a miata thing). I have experience with frontpage and nothing else. I'm sure I could learn, but I just want to make sure I choose the best choice to learn about.

Depending on a million things I'm hoping to have a store section, but that wont be for awhile and I think Paypal has something I can use for that.

Here's my dilemma. I need to get this thing going ASAP but I cant get myself started. Not sure of the exact details but when I registered the sites from godaddy.com it said something about "30 days to use 80% of my space"?

I'm gonna check up on the VWD one now, see what it looks like.

Definitely stick with VWD if your only experience is in FrontPage. Don't use FrontPage, it makes terribly messy pages (behind the scenes) and is really designed for people who don't want to do any coding at all. Also, make sure you use 'Master Pages' when making the site -- makes this much easier. Google for it to see what I mean.

W3Schools Online Web Tutorials is a good place to get started on basic HTML/CSS. Use MSDN for anything regarding VWD.

For videos, you'll need to convert whatever you want to post to flash video (.flv). A progam called FFMpeg will do anything you need for that. Unofficial FFmpeg Win32 Builds has a command line build, though there are GUIs out there for it. To play the videos, google Jwplayer. That's the player I use for vids at work.

I've never heard of a hosting provider demand that you fill up space. I put a client's site on GoDaddy a couple years back and don't remember any such rule. Maybe you misread? I mean, you're paying, why should they care if you don't use up all you available space?
