I kicked started my car today due to a dead battery. I'm cool. The end.

wtf is kick starting?

and who the hell is jack bauer?

Braineack 04-15-2009 09:46 AM

Last time i saw jack his pussy ass was getting pwned by some bioweapon. I'm still living large and driving my miata in the rain.

wtf is kick starting?
kick/push start.

I put the car to ON, put the car in second and put my foot on the clutch. Then i proceeded to roll the car down an incline and after I got enough speed I let off the clutch (which started the car) and off I went.

Oh that's right, he saves the country 4x in 96 hours and you had to do your clutch job 4x in 96 hours....lol. ;)

kotomile 04-15-2009 09:53 AM

I thought everyone with an EMS with less than perfect cranking tables had done this at least once.

Braineack 04-15-2009 09:54 AM

why don't you all suck it? how about that!

Saml01 04-15-2009 10:03 AM

Did your starter die?

240_to_miata 04-15-2009 10:04 AM

my friend had a beater in high school.... old first gen prelude. It didn't even have a starter ( a used one would have been worth more than the car, lol). We used to have to run on the side of it and jump in to start it any time we wanted to go somewhere. It got kinda interesting when you were parallel parked.

Then the ring came off of his flywheel and jammed in the bell housing and his car came screeching to its death.

THE END.

Interesting. I always thought it worked only when the starter was dead, not the battery.

Btw. next time just put it in reverse the car will be started before you get to the end of the driveway.

y8s 04-15-2009 10:41 AM

mine died today while I was rolling 2mph. popped the clutch in 1st and kep gowan.

ismael_pt 04-15-2009 10:54 AM

Mcgiver would have done it with a toothpick turning the crankshaft

Mine did it twice today as well. Must be my less than stellar tuning skillz. Never died before. Idle dipped on clutch in but didn't recover from the dip. It was warm, too. One more thing to fix in my map.

hustler 04-15-2009 11:33 AM

I had to do this for a while when I first purchased the green car and had no money. I was hard-up for cash and my vw was dead...and after paying $1600 cash for the car, I had like -$300 in checking, lol. Rather than buy a new battery for $100, I just parked on hills or pushed by the roll bar and jumped in at speed.

nicacus 04-15-2009 11:36 AM

I had a sentra in highshcool with a starter that never worked, even after it had been changed twice.
I got really good at pushing it around, and you know the ladies loved going for rides and getting jerked around when I popped the clutch.

Torkel 04-15-2009 12:14 PM

I call you kick start and raise:

Last days before moving home from the US: I had already put my Miata on a ship and was driving my beater: -86 Nissan 200SX. The deal was that a good friend (who was in a bit of a bad financial state) would get the car as a gift when I boarded the plane home. And then, 48 hours before take off, the starter dies. So I parked it downhill over night in order to be able to roll-start it and then simply left it running for the complete next day. I did all the last errands a man has to do before he leaves the country, visiting friends, shopping, visiting authorities and so on. I used 2 keys and left one in the ignition (car running) and locked the car with the other. The guys at the gas station didn’t quite like me fuelling up with the car running, but it was that or help me push, so they let is slide. Parked it downhill again in the evening. Last thing I did in the US was roll-start my old beast, pick up my friend and drive to the airport. I still kind of miss that old tank of a car.

Preluding 04-15-2009 12:35 PM

Chuck Norris would just have to look at it and it would start in the past.

Braineack 04-15-2009 01:01 PM

listen assholes, never kicked start a car before. just pat me on the back and make pretend you care as much as i do :P

Qckslvr 04-15-2009 01:04 PM

you haven't lived till you killed the battery in a 1962 Triumph TR4. Then pull the hand crank out of the trunk. Then have your classmates stare at you as you insert the crank into the grill, and crank the engine over. Fun Times :D

I bump started my old Miata just to see how difficult it was a couple times, in case I ever had to do it. If you killed the battery by leaving the lights on, I'm actually surprised that there was enough juice to turn on the ECU and other electronics necessary for the car to fire/run, even outside of the starter.

This is exactly what im curious about.

Braineack 04-15-2009 03:56 PM

its a good thing i had a jump box on it too :P

jayc72 04-15-2009 06:05 PM

I've push started my Miata when it didn't have enough juice to turn the car over. An ECU and fuel pump doesn't require the same kind of power a starter does.

I used to have a chevette that I needed to do this to fairly regularly on my own. I'd do it in reverse, get the car moving a bit jump in and pop the clutch. In reverse the car barely has to be moving.

Now I'm all growed up and own booster cables and another car. :)

curly 04-15-2009 07:32 PM

"Jack Bauer would have gotten the ring to Mordor in 24 hours."

LOL

below a certain voltage, the starter doesn't have enough juice to push past the compression of the pistons, but you'll have enough to start up the ECU and fuel pump. Even without, I think the alternator will generate enough power to drive the car. I may go unplug my battery while the cars running to see if this is true.

Better yet, Joe Perez, go grab a six pack and make a new movie.

gospeed81 04-15-2009 08:55 PM

will run without battery...found mine on other side of the trunk one day after some really spirited driving (car didn't have battery tie down when I picked it up).

lol! no love for braineack.

You never kick started a car in your life until today?

And here I am reading your posts as if you were the knowitall :giggle:

naarleven 04-15-2009 09:53 PM

FYI, push starting a miata is difficult if you use 2nd. 3rd is a little better for those of us with no hills. It will start up at like 100rpms and rescue itself when you put the clutch back in.

p.s. I've done this at least 6 times with my car when diagnosing fuel pump relay problems.

kotomile 04-15-2009 09:58 PM

I just use first or reverse.. :dunno:

curly 04-15-2009 09:58 PM

"hey guys lolz I hears about thiz sit from a frind of me cuz i wnat a mega squirt (haha, squirt) but the bra makin' them never even push starts his car lolz wtf how i am supposed to trust that tool omg lolz bbq nasdaq haha"

gompers 04-15-2009 10:03 PM

I must do this fairly often, however, I'm usually rolling when my car dies, so no prob :)

Fuck my VTA bov w/a maf

twat?? doesn't the car slow down too much, you need a higher gear otherwise the clutch will just absorb the speed and you won't start.

kotomile 04-15-2009 10:10 PM

Just have to side-step it and have enough speed going. I have a light flywheel, maybe that helps.

In first or reverse you dont have to be going very fast to get the engine cranking quickly.

Vashthestampede 04-16-2009 04:48 PM

I always referred to it as "pop starting". :dunno:

Braineack 04-16-2009 04:49 PM

poop the clutch.

icantthink4155 04-16-2009 07:20 PM

The manual says not to push start the car because it could damage the emissions equiptment. Ive done it, not too hard.

Bryce 04-16-2009 07:33 PM

I don't EVER worry about a dead battery. My driveways are VERY steep.

I have sat in the drivers seat and propelled the car forwards with my foot and popped the clutch too, though it might be hard getting your foot in quick enough if you're tall.

WTF BRYCE IS HERE?
