Bro-vice on being sick

I'm dying here. And I can't miss out on work Monday, and by this I mean I need to be running like a well oiled machine, either way I'm going in. This isn't a normal sinus infection, it's like a sinus infection + massive migraine + upset stomach. Do any of you fruits have some get better super fast tricks? Or at least recommend me something that will make it all numb? I never get sick so this is new to me, WTF do I do bros???? :noob:

matthewdesigns 01-07-2012 06:24 PM

You ever use a Neti pot? It looks like a small ceramic version of Aladdin's lamp. You fill it with warm salty water (like you might gargle with) and pour it through your sinuses. No, not kidding. Yes, it's messy, so do it in/over the tub. It's the quickest way I use to relieve sinus congestion/pain/bacteria. You'll need to do it multiple times over the weekend for best results. You should be able to find one at Walgreens. If not, a health food store/supply would have one. It won't cure you by itself, but it'll help a lot.

Also, eat a shitload of raw garlic and ginger. Look up some recipes online for teas made with them.

gearhead_318 01-07-2012 06:25 PM

Sleep, vitamin C, hydrate, sleep. Is there a CVS clinic open near you? Might be worth a shot.

FRT_Fun 01-07-2012 06:33 PM

Interesting. How do I pour something through my sinuses? Tilt head back and go at it? That seems worse than just suffering. Although it might be a last resort thing. Since I'm at a hotel I can't really get too crazy. I do have a kitchenette with some minor things. Frack this is BS. I've been attempting to sleep all day but the pressure from my sinus is freaking terrible. And I'm a bitch.

I use the neti squirt bottle. The secret is to relax and let the goop flow. It will help immensely.

Squirt bottle seems a bit more humane. Might go with that.

For upset stomach... What is something good to drink? I've heard sprite, but will coke work? I think some of my headache is related to the fact that I've had no caffeine today.

I have some NyQuil stuff I plan to take around 10pm or so to help pass out.

And how do you recommend I go about using Zinc? Just eat it? Like a pill or something?

trickyrix 01-07-2012 06:46 PM

It's a little fucked up the first time you use it, but I'm a big fan now. Warm water and kosher salt - maybe 1/4 teaspoon. MAKE SURE THE SALT DISSOLVES COMPLETELY. Don't be a bitch... just sack up and try it.

hustler 01-07-2012 06:47 PM

Just slam water, it will help to flush the body. 2 Gallons per day. I drink one gallon per day when feeling well. Protein and fat will also help the body.

kaboshe 01-07-2012 06:47 PM

as a masive smoker+incredibly stupid weather in canada, i'm used to sinus/throat infection.

there is next to no other way than penicelin to get that kind of infection away from my new-bord immunitary system.

i founded the other day that the cough sirup compagny ''buckley'' are making new ''all symptom'' releive gel caps.nevcer tried those before, BUT i used the buckely gel caps for ''day and night'' and this is doing plain miracle to make all symptoms disapears.

read me well, it aint gonna make you feel better, but you wont be ''feeling'' sick.

double the dose and go to work, that's what i'm doing in case of influenza/hardcore cold/sinus infection. 2 ''day'' gel caps keep me like a new man for 4h. same thing in the afternoon, and 2 ''night caps '' makes me sleep like a baby.

forgive all the typos, i'm trying my best here

edit-do NOT mix those buckley gel caps with anything else. it's SUPER STRONG and if you take 6 caps a day and take a nyquill ''lemon and honey'' cup , you'll puke your stomach out,ask me how i know.

if youre addicted to caffeine like me, you'll feel like your head is gonna explode when you quit drinking some for a day or more.

for the stomac, rollaids are great, but yet again, dont take them within 2 hours before/after the cold medecine

hustler 01-07-2012 06:50 PM

I also recommend a garden hose enema, hourly.

What works the best for me is easy calories. I find the worst thing I can do while I am sick is skip a meal or otherwise not eat - and remember, while fighting a cold, your body needs more calories than normal, so I find that it works best if I eat more.

Additionally, make sure to get enough fluids. This is the other big thing that kicked my ass in the past. I didn't drink enough of non-alcoholic beverages. Dehydration, even minor, for me was about as bad as not eating. Plus, hydrating with hot fluids helps partially or even fully alleviate some of the symptoms. (Edit: +1 to Hustler's suggestion to flush with fluids basically, although I don't stay strictly to water but also use juices, some kinds of hot chocolate, that sort of thing. Sprite or 7up to help settle your stomach may work, carbonated beverages don't do it for me.)

Beyond that, get as much rest as you can. Anyways, that's just what I do - I've never tried any of the fancy medicine I see recommended here, and I'm too gutless to try a neti pot.

FRT_Fun 01-07-2012 06:58 PM

At home I'd just stick it out and let it die naturally, but I have to be at the top of my game all next week and feeling like this won't cut it. I've got a case of smartwater next to me, but I haven't eaten anything all day. I feel like I will vomit it up. Plus right now my only options are eating out since I'm not home. I doubt pizza will work well. These chips seem to be working okay.

blaen99 01-07-2012 07:01 PM

This is just *my* experience, but not eating makes me feel sicker, which in turn makes me not want to eat more, which makes me feel sicker...Basically, I am setting myself up to feel shittier and shittier.

If I could not keep down solid food, I would switch to orange juice or a similar beverage for calories. But starving your body means your body has to cannibalize itself for energy to fight the sickness.

FRT_Fun 01-07-2012 07:03 PM

Cannibalize???? NOT MY MUSCLES!! lol but seriously not working out has been killing me too. I hate messing up my gym schedule. Now I'm sick. I'm going to lose so much weight. I don't have lbs to spare! I have some cottage cheese I may eat very slowly shortly. That is seriously all I have besides my chips :(

I'm about to go down stairs and buy a sprite and coke.

Savington 01-07-2012 07:05 PM

I seem to be more prone than some to sinus infections, and I swear by Afrin. Get it in the pump-spray version, 3 hits in each nostril before you go to work, 3 before you go to bed.

The bottle says to discontinue use after 5 days, and they mean it. Your sinuses will develop a physical dependence on the stuff if you use it longer.

I eat a lot of toast when I can't keep anything else down.

FRT_Fun 01-07-2012 07:09 PM

Oh toast, I like that. Hotel friendly and the gas station just up the block will probably stock it.

Afrin, I think I've heard of that. It's over the counter?

jbrown7815 01-07-2012 07:13 PM

Drink lots of water

Since you work out, think of it this way.

Imagine not eating for a day or two, then going to the gym. How are you going to feel an hour afterwards? I will have a hunger headache and some other stuff going on.

It's the same general idea, just multiplied with the shitty feeling from being sick. Other than toast, you could also consider soups as well (Or, even, soup and toast!). Chicken noodle or tomato soup may seem to come up repeatedly with respect to sickness, but it's for a reason. They work. It's also incredibly important to hydrate as well, at least in my experience.

FRT_Fun 01-07-2012 07:17 PM

Srsly why isn't there a cure to this stuff yet? How hard can it really be to fight. Lazy biologists.

94mx5red 01-07-2012 07:24 PM

yes, Afrin is over the counter.

matthewdesigns 01-07-2012 07:28 PM

Glad I'm not the only freak here who uses a neti pot lol. Also, though you are stuck at a hotel, try not to eat anything processed. Bad in general, but definitely not good when you are trying to heal.

messiahx 01-07-2012 07:32 PM

Make sure you eat/drink plenty of water. There's gotta be something that sounds good to eat, so go down to walmart and get it. If you're taking sudafed or anything like that, you'll have to hydrate even moreso. Anyways, get as full on food/water as you comfortably can and take a good dose of sleep aids. Wake up 12 hours later, take a hot shower to loosen up the sinuses, go win at life.

+1

Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate. Your in the Army right? You should always be hydrated, pretend your in basic training again and you HAVE to drink sh*t loads of water. Drink slowly if you think you'll puke, puking is the enemy of staying hydrated, so don't puke. Hydrate.

This has been going around in our area. Its nasty. Comes on with headache and follows with 24 hrs of violent vomiting.

If you go into work with this. You are an a$$. It seems to be easily passed around.

Nyquil, a quart of water and 8-10 hours sleep. Get up and slam another quart of water at 2AM, repeat Nyquil. Get up feeling all better.

No choice on that front. Not my decision. I'm just that important.

The headache is owning me right now. I've got the sinus pressure almost gone, I ended up blowing my nose a crap ton and all the green mucus came out and since then the pressure is gone, and my whole nose area feels better. I have Nyquil on stand bye and will drink a quart of water before sleeping.

FRT_Fun 01-07-2012 09:45 PM

Well just downed my Nyquil. Drinking massive amounts of water and then watching videos until I pass out. Will report in the morning. If nothing is better I will have to try the crazy nepi thing or whatever it's called.

samnavy 01-07-2012 10:12 PM

Are you at a full-service hotel? They should have no problem bringing you unseasoned chicken and rice... plain white rice and a plain white chicken breast. You need to eat through this thing. Pull chicken breast apart and consume in very small bites.

Airborne... you need to be popping one every few hours into your water. I like the orange flavor.

Neti-pot for the win. Any drug-store Walgreens/RiteAid will have a few... be sure to get some of the little packets of salt stuff that goes in the water. Don't wait on this one... get one right away and start flushing.

While you're at Rite-Aid, get a humidifier... or get 2. Put them on either side of your bed and turn the AC off... you want to get the room up to like 100% humidity while you sleep.

And grab some Breathe-Right strips... nothing in the science with these, but I always sleep a little better when I'm a bit stuffed up.

gearhead_318 01-07-2012 10:20 PM

I like to stuff a tissue in the nostril that is congested, not kidding, really helps me sleep.

FRT_Fun 01-08-2012 09:15 AM

Good news. Woke up feeling pretty awesome. Starving and thirsty, but not sick. I could feel the Nyquil working basically as soon as I took it. My sinuses opened up and my nose was running like crazy. Feel asleep with my face in the pillow so that was kind of a mess. I still have a bit of a headache. I think once I eat breakfast and get some more liquid in me I'll feel good. Just glad I didn't have to do a nepi pot. I'm definitely keeping that in my book for future sickness.

Being sick is terrible. I don't remember the last time I was sick. I managed to not even get sick the entire time I was in Afghanistan. Oh well. Thanks for the advice, next time I start to get sick I'll be prepared.

bigx5murf 01-10-2012 04:06 AM

for upset stomachs, I take kefir. Last time I got sick, I replaced cigarettes with electronics ones and got better in a day lol

y8s 01-10-2012 09:57 AM

take remedies, not immunity boosters.

I forget where I read (several places) but recent studies are suggesting that trying to boost your immune system AFTER you're sick can potentially increase duration and severity of colds. You want your body to do all the work and build up its own strength against infection.

Dope up on sudafed, afrin, whatever you want. But skip the airborne, zinc, echinacea, etc.

Also one of the biggest contributors to poor health is cortisol--the stress hormone.

Go into work and fu ing deal with it you wussy bitch!

Whenever I have customer meetings I NEVER can call out sick. No matter how sick, tired, and hungover/drunk I am I will always show up and have my A+ game.

That said if your sinuses are fu d then go to CVS/walgreens and get some real deal decongestant. 12 hour Pseudoephedrine. It will be with the Pharmacist probably (no scrip needed) because people use that shi to make meth. Take one of those and your sinuses will clear up.

when im sick, i drink alot of tea and stay well rested. by alot i mean, finish a cup then wait a few minutes make new one repeat. my sickness usually doesnt last more than a day

astroboy 01-13-2012 12:14 AM

When I am sick I drink water like a fish, keep up on my vitamins, and sleep like it is my job. When I can't sleep any more I take a shot of Nyquil and get back to work. Day 2 consists of soup, OJ, more water, and fruit. There usually isn't a day 3.

chpmnsws6 01-14-2012 03:52 AM

Afrin for no more then 3 days. Neti pots are a bad idea. They've found bacteria can reside in them creating more harm then good. Snort warm salt water, followed by warm tap water. The salt and chlorine will kill most bacterias and also dry out the sinuses a bit while REALLY emptying them out. I have to do this once every hour or two when sick, but it keeps me from sniffling all day. Alka-Seltzer is also used at regular intervals. Keep hydrated. I'll say it again, KEEP HYDRATED.

If your athletic at all, I've also found a REAL hard run out in in the cold works also. It raises the body temp (bacteria like a real narrow window of temps) and also empties out the sinuses/lungs. I'll do this at night so no one sees my constantly having to "farmers blow" my nose every block or two.
