Buying engine questions
Im going to pick up a 1.8. Owner has seperated head and block for me already. I got 2 of the largest plastic containers I could find that will fit into my honds accord.
Questions: 1) What type of paperwork do i need, if any? What if its stolen? Lol. I doubt it, just considering the worst case scenario. 2) what should I look for when inspecting the motor? I know to look for score marks on the cylinder walls? Is there anything else to look for? Det marks but it will be rebuilt. 3) are there any dead giveaways that its a 1.8 motor? Will there be BP stamps on head and block? Thanks. First time picking up a motor for rebuilding, any other tips? |

The block will have "BP" cast into the surface which is normally hidden behind the flywheel, and also stamped into a machined section on the top adjacent to the deck. The head will also have "BP" cast into it on the backside just above the outlet which feeds the heater core. If it's an NB engine, there will be some extra letters / numbers after the "BP". |
As for miata engines, its good to know if it came from an automatic, or a 5-speed. The engines are fully compatible, but based on your turbo setup and based on if you are doing a drop in vs. a rebuild, the automatic has a lower compression ratio than the 5-speed. if it has spark plugs with it, check to see if they are fowled, if not ask if it has been compression checked. Its always a plus to know the mileage, but that is very difficult to determine when purchasing from an autowrecker. Its always best to get a bill of sale, and make sure that bill of sale guarantees a good healthy running engine.

Picked it up. It fit in a large plastic container in my back seat of the accord. The head is in the front seat w. Intake Mani.
