messiahx 07-07-2009 01:53 PM

That is SO last year. But I can't wait for the next/final installment of HL2. Best Sci-Fi FPS ever.

Joe Perez 07-07-2009 04:06 PM

Hmm. Apart from Guitar Hero, the last VG series that I was really into was the whole Doom / Quake franchise. Guess I'm about 10-15 years out from anything really popular. My losing interest pretty much coincided with the hardware requirements for games getting really insane.

Try Fallout. First two have VERY modest requirements.

I got enough credit card rewards points for $150 of Best Buy gift cards, so I ended up picking up GH:World Tour.

BAD. ASS.

The drums are pretty much my favorite-est thing ever.

Oh, and the last game I bought prior to that was the Orange Box, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies, etc. etc. etc.

9671111 07-07-2009 04:24 PM

Oh my god, you ------s and your guitar hero.

Trent 07-07-2009 04:26 PM

Well, I actually play the guitar as well. Does that make you feel any better?

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/rock_band.png

Project84 07-07-2009 04:39 PM

lol rockband is easy to stereotype as "lame" I'm very guilty of that... then I played it and I was having a lot of fun and felt like such a jerk for making fun of everyone for like 2 years. Drunk rockband is even better... on drums of course.

I lost interest after Quake 3 sucked... now IT'S BACK in BETA form and you can stream it w/ minimal downloads to get started. I play against my father (well, in Clan Arena against others as well) and we chat on there as a means to keeping in touch.

QUAKE LIVE BETA

If you wanna play, add me to your friends, "The_Gunslinger"

I play no modern games. :)

So you guys drive Miatas and play a lot of video games? What part of this are you proud of again? So at your parties do you see who can convert "pi" to binary code the furthest number of places in five minutes?

I played it and still thought it was gay. I guess closet ------s like it because it's a glorified dance dance revolution they can play with their lame ass classic rock highschool buddies. Do you guys jam with those long haired losers in Best Buy when you go there or do you just jerk them off while they're getting a new high score? :fawk:

I got hooked on GH while visiting an old high school buddy in Hoboken, NJ a few months ago. Three lawyers and a law-school dropout all jamming in his tiny apartment. Bought World Tour for the 360 as soon as I got back. Never played with the drums, however as a result of me getting my family hooked on it when I brought my 360 and two controllers over to their place for the 4'th, I went out and bought RockBand2 for their Wii this afternoon, so I guess I'll be playing with the drums soon enough. Now to find a second guitar controller. I've hit two GameStop stores today, and while they both had a plethora of used controller for PS/x and Xbox, not a single Wii controller in sight. I don't want to pay $70 for a new one, and I'm not sure I want to risk a $30 knockoff. On the plus side, I did pick up Legends of Rock for the 360 for $10 while at the first GameStop.

God dammit Joe, I was just about to say that Trent is actually gay, since he's not only admitted to liking guitar hero and obviously Miatas, but now he's quoting Eddie Izzard. Guess you're gay too. Of course I have 4 of his DVD's, so I'll just STFU.

Joe Perez 07-08-2009 08:46 PM

On the whole Guitar Hero / RockBand meme, I must say one thing. Today, I was in nine different videogame stores (looking for a World Tour controller for the Wii) and in about 2/3 of them, someone was talking about, checking out, or purchasing some guitar-game related item.

You may think it's stupid, but it's a hell of a successful franchise.

You would've been the last person in the world I would have suspected fall victim of the Rock band ------ry.

Here's my problem with it... I hate it just like I fucking bloody hate cover bands. "Oh, look at me.. I want to be in a band so I can be cool, but I can't write my own shit.. What do I do? *lightbulb* I've got it! I'll just steal all the great music of everyone else and replay it, badly at shit hole bars! w00t!"

See, its the same thing.. Only for the most part the rock band and guitar hero ------ry takes it a bit further.. "I'm a lame untalented emo loser who can't learn to play a real musical instrument, much less be creative enough to create my own music... So I'll pickup this stupid video game which was brilliantly marketed for ------s like myself and pretend to be in my VERY OWN shitty cover band!"

Jesus, I can see it now.. I'll walk into some bar and theres a group of assholes on the stage with a giant tv and their shitty little plastic insturments playing cover songs.. God I'd go postal.. I'd likely beat them to death with their fake microphones!! :loser::jerkit::hustler::vash:

Not that I lose any respect or mean to offend you in anyway, Joe. You're still the man... ;) And to those who can actually play REAL musical insturments, Cool. You get a gold star. Now go and write your OWN music!

On a side note, I'll mention, thats the very same reason I fucking hate kanye west the self-proclaimed "master of the mix?" Yeah, more like master of stealing everyone elses thunder..

Mercedes... Off. :giggle:

Kanye is a piece of trash. Says he's too creative for twitter, the michael jordan of rapping and the voice of his generation. Fuck that dude.

Project84 07-09-2009 07:24 AM

The thing about rockband is....

It's lame. But if you're drinking and having a small party it can be a blast! Getting 5 or 6 drinks in and trying to watch what notes to hit proves to be quite the challenge, and everyone has a great time. We did this at last year's Halloween party, it was hilarious.

You mentioned walking into a bar and seeing RockBand and a big TV.... already happens around here. One local place has rockband every Thursday night I think. If you can play any given song 3 times, on easy, medium, and expert, and get a 98% accuracy or higher you get a $10 credit to your tab. They also have Wii bowling, high score for the night gets a $20 credit.

South Park episode 1113: "Guitar Queer-O" Guitar Queer-o - Episode Guide - South Park Studios You can watch the full episode here. My favorite is "Heroin Hero"

It was on last night and I thought of you, fondly.

Edit: And I just remembered that they made fun of how arrogant and ignorant Kanye West is throughout this recent episode http://www.southparkstudios.com/guide/1305/

Here's the thing I don't get: what's the big deal?

It's a videogame. The purpose is to have fun and be entertained. So I don't see what makes GH/RB any worse than, say, Sonic the Hedgehog. Ok, so playing Sonic does not actually give me super powers or turn me into a spiny blue mammal of the order Erinaceomorpha. And playing Call of Duty doesn't make me into an elite soldier (or at least, it wouldn't if I played it.) And playing Team Fortress 2 does not actually make me into... whatever the hell those guys are. But who cares? They're still fun.

Actually I think that the guitar / band games have a lot more socially redeeming value than most any other sort of game on the market today. By their nature, they encourage you to play cooperatively with, and in the same room as, other people. Friends, family, etc. Yeah, I know the more advanced FPS games encourage cooperative gameplay, but those are optimized for every player to have their own console and their own display, so by their nature you wind up playing with people who you are connected to only by a network. With GH, you tend to play side by side with others. When the game is over, you're still both there in the same room, having a drink, lunch, conversation, etc. Hell, it's been over 30 years since the last game I can personally recall playing that was optimized for that sort of environment. (Combat, on the Atari 2600). Actually, I take that back- there was Contra back in '88 on the NES. That was same-screen multiplayer, and it was only 21 years ago. But seriously- did nobody notice when cooperative, same-screen gameplay sorta went away after that until just recently?

I think maybe it's more to do with the fact that the controller is shaped like a guitar instead of a gamepad. If that's the case though, then where were you guys back when Duck Hunt came out? 'Course, even then I realized that being able to shoot that little light gun didn't make me a real marksman (though nobody told Marty McFly, apparently.)

Moral of the story: why u b hatin'?

elesjuan 07-09-2009 02:16 PM

I remember Combat. Contra too. Those games were the shit. How about Gauntlet? "Red warrior needs food badly!"

Hey, to each their own. While you make a few very good points in there I'm just not a game player. I used to play Tiger Woods 2006 on my xbox until the piece of shit quit working. Back in middle and highschool was a completely different story. Middle School was when DOOM came out. We made our own levels with characters. Then a couple years later Quake was released and we became addicted to TF-CTF. I never played quake2, but 3 was released and I honed my skills into an expert marksman with a railgun, even though my ping times were 400+ms. :loser: I'm talking sniping asshats with ISDN and T1 lines. lol.

Anyway, I just don't have time for games really and what I've seen of those two they're just not interesting to me at all. To each their own. ;)
