Default What is your utlimate track day car

I asked this question to a group of Miata buddies at World Of Beer,"If money was no object and you could buy any track day car in the world what would it be, but it HAS to be your daily driver?"

Does it have to be street legal, or are we talking no-holds-bar impossibilities?

No-holds-bar: Ferrari FXX (who cares about clearing speed bumps)
Practical: McLaren F1
Awesome: 1939 Auto Union Type D

You guys missed the bold part about it also having to be a daily driver. I'm going to go with E34 5 series wagon with an LSx swap. The LS swap get the correct amount of power and gets rid of the only unreliable parts on the car. If I'm allowed to have a second vehicle to haul larger things, C5Z vette.

I like building as well as driving.

So . . . LS Miata? Maybe one of those Factory Five 818s? Buddy has a Factory Five Daytona that looks darn sexy and goes fast on track.

If I were to do this, I would also be retired, which means "who cares about DD"?

McLaren P1

Realistically, probably an e39 m5. Or an Exige. or a c7 Z06.

btw whoever said they would daily a McLaren F1 is ridiculous. That car would be my living room center piece.

I'm surprised no one's said Miata yet. As comfortable of a daily driver as any of the cars we've mentioned here, and 99% of people trying one for the first time on track say they're more fun that what they brought.

If not a Miata, I'd have to be careful with the powerful cars. By the time you're having fun you can easily be 3x the speed limit.

I did drive my friend's C6 and the low end torque is addicting. I'd be doing lots of 0-speed limit drag races. Very fun and seems comfortable enough for a daily. Huge car though. Wouldn't want to live anywhere near something resembling a city.

You would need both because the Ultima would never run.

I dd a Miata with no a/c (its 97 today), no p/s, 4.5* caster (100lb torque on steering wheel to park), 6 pts, have to remove the qr steering wheel and high flexibility to get in, 6x4.3 gearing that is worthless/annoying on the street, no washer bottle, 1/2" gap between side window and top, billet mount 700/400 xidas. All because its a perfect HPDE Miata.

I would daily the **** out of a C7R in order to be able to track it. Anything I would have interest taking to the track would have to be more fun than the 95R or the C6Z.

Anyway, I like the 918 more than the P1

I think you won. Everyone keeps coming up with these crazy ideas, but the whole "it has to be your daily driver" kills them for me. A 911 is about as "exotic" of a track car as I can think of that could successfully double as a daily driver for me.
