car parts as wedding decorations

In discussing how weddings are "not about the guy" with the fiancee, I came up with the idea of using car or other manly themed stuff to make it less of a frilly deal.

I told her a 6UL as a table centerpiece would be awesome. Slightly out of budget, but then a group buy with a minor delay would be ok, right? :D

she actually thought the idea was interesting and worth looking into, but I need ideas from the doods around here.

I think it could be done tastefully, but I think it could MORE EASILY be shitty and trashy. I am going to avoid that at all costs. This is a classy affair, even with car parts all over.

and please try to keep it serious.

some ideas:

wheel centerpieces
upside down piston candle holders
groom wearing driving shoes
brake disks always make good stand bases

lets see what you got.

get two little miatas to go on top of the cake........one for you the man and the other for woman!

So much for classy and serious! :)

How about checker flag used sparingly in the decorations? Winner Circle/Podium type deal for the head table. Use a diecast car as the heart of the center piece at each table. Wedding party enter the reception with helmets on? Hot wheels cars as the party favour? Car track table cloths? Set up a slot car track on a table somewhere as entertainment.

i don't like the idea at all and think it will "cheapen" the event. I was actually at a car themed wedding when my wife's friend married a mechanic, wasn't so good. I'd try to steer her away from expenses nobody will likely recall 2 years after. Most likely only a handful of people will even appreciate it anyway. Our wedding was outdoors at old author's estate, nothing inclusive, not even trash removal. we decided to forego most decorations as nature provided beautiful scenery. it also helped that my mom has a horticulture degree and did all the other stuff. I also don't think you need to spend a ton of money on food either because nobody remebers it and shit it all out the next day anyway. we had a pig roast. our wedding was truly awesome mostly becuase it was outdoors even though we cut as many corners as we could.

now if her parents are footing the bill, go nuts. my wifes parents are poor and paid about half of it, i did the rest

It's A Nice Day For A Skyline Wedding - Nissan Skyline - Jalopnik

Pretty cheesy in my opinion. It would be sweet if it could be done in a classier way though.

That rules out anything having to do with NASCAR.

It's going to be difficult to incorporate car parts without looking like an episode of Redneck Wedding. You're going to need NEW stuff, or thoroughly cleaned used parts, because any trace of rust will immediately turn it from classy to crappy.

Checkered flag pattern table cloths are too much IMO, but cocktail napkins would look cool without going overboard. Or "carbon fiber look" stuff if you can find it. Chrome, stainless, and/or titanium bits should fit into whatever color scheme the bride had in mind. A clean wheel might make an okay cake stand/base. Does anybody make rod/piston/sprocket cuff links for the groomsmen?

Honestly I think it's going to be difficult to incorprate enough car stuff to have a "theme" without going too far towards cheesy. But just because it's all about her (it is) that doesn't mean it has to be all frilled and laced to death either. If you can wield veto power over anything with pink or purple in it, that will help keep the estrogen in check. We got married on a beach, had the requisite amount of flowers (corsages, boutonnieres, bouquets) to make it a nice event for the family, and I never felt like things got girlied up out of control. So it's not the end of the world if she ends up nixing your car parts.

Keep in mind that the groom is allowed to have a gift registry at a tool store. I did. :D

Also, if you fuck up anything with the wedding, having top shelf booze at the reception makes it easier to forgive & forget.

I like the idea of the piston candle holders.

Are you guys doing menu cards or anything? If so you could just print a faint tire track down the side of the menu card.

The only thing automotive I was allowed to do at my wedding was wear shift knob cufflinks.

neogenesis2004 12-16-2009 08:02 PM

Sounds like a terrible idea.

y8s 12-16-2009 08:33 PM

i had high hopes for you guys... so far, i'm pretty disappointed. apparently a shared love of miatas does not equate to a shared love of good taste.

WonTon 12-16-2009 08:38 PM

so mean....

you mods have all the fun.....

Cococarbine3 12-16-2009 08:56 PM

Just make sure you don't overdo it. You still want it to be classy, not like a halloween frat party.

An edible miata for a cake topper would be pretty cool. You could have models of you two in the car waving as well.

ScottFW 12-16-2009 09:22 PM

If you could find a cheap source of roller bearings you'd have some cool napkin rings. That's classy as hell right there.

Faeflora 12-16-2009 11:02 PM

I do dig the "why does it have to be all about the woman" point.

But Ugh wow. Checker flag napkins? Why even bother trying? Maybe if both of you were into cars it would be -ok-, but I'm assuming that both of you aren't.

Instead of having pistons and wheels for you and tweezers and curling irons for her, how about something with a "shared interests" theme?

Also, plz don't go into debt for the wedding. You don't want that to be the beginning- of shared debt :(

jacob300zx 12-17-2009 01:51 AM

This would be more appropriate at the reception dinner...

Been pondering this one...

Hate to say it, but I can't see this happening. The wedding really is all about the woman. Well, her and her parents. Let 'em do their thing, don't interfere apart from offering supportive opinions when asked, and it'll be a more pleasant experience for all involved.

And I'm being serious when I say this. Every bride (and mother of bride) has a sort of Disney-esque romantic preconception of how the Big Day is supposed to be, and trying to muddle with that is only going to foster dissent and decrease their overall enjoyment of it without meaningfully increasing yours. n

Nagase 12-17-2009 04:36 AM

I'll have to side with Joe on this, but from another take...

Car stuff is about hard, cold things that last forever.

Weddings are supposed to be soft, dreamlike and transitory in nature.

Trying to combine the two is mixing polar opposites. It's not romantic to try and shove cars into marriage... it should be about people, not about what you posses. Unless cars defines who you and her are as people, as a couple, I'd recommend you drop it.

I'd recommend saving the car stuff for furniture and other in house decorations... that can last forever.
