Change oil before or after dyno run?

We only have 2500 miles on the synth oil but it has been over 6 months since the last change and that is probably long enough even though the MSM turbo is water cooled (I don't mind spending the $25 for the extra oil change each year). We are getting ready to do some pulls on a dyno and I was just wondering what you guys thought about changing oil before or after the pulls (three of them).

Braineack 01-27-2011 12:41 PM

I check my levels before, but I don't change based on a few dyno pulls.

shuiend 01-27-2011 12:49 PM

When you doing pulls and where?

rmcelwee 01-27-2011 01:44 PM

HHR (or something like that). About 2-3 blocks from Frankies Fun Park. Gonna hit it tomorrow around noon.

nickblackbelt 01-27-2011 01:48 PM

i bet if you change it, it will net like 2 or 3 HP .....i always like fresh oil

1 dyno pull is equivalent to how many hours of track time? I can go about 8-hours on an oil change before it deteriorates.

A dyno pull takes about 15 seconds. So three of them is 45 secs. Lets round up to 60secs to make it easy.

So a dyno session is the equivalent of .016667 of an hour of track time.

It would take 480 dyno sessions to wear out the oil.

EDIT: sorry wrong thread

So, do you change your oil before or after going to the track?

18psi 01-27-2011 02:37 PM

If its dirty/old then change it.
Going to the dyno or not has nothing to do with anything imo.
Just a 10 second pull like you would do if you were driving it spiritedly.

I change it after every 3 or 4 track days. I don't count miles anymore.

Think about the way we drive our cars on the street every day. Personally, I suspect that one dyno session is roughly equivalent to about one week worth of commuting to and from work.

cold starts are bad for oil. not many of those on the dyno.

Rob for your one pull, don't bother.

Guys, I think I'm going to merge onto the highway at WOT three times tomorrow. Should I change the oil now or after I do it?

Your turbozz needs at least 24h to cool down in between WOTs, yo! You can do max 1 WOT per day, perhaps 2 if you are careful. My buddy told me this and he has a civic so it is for sure true. Honda turbos cool down much faster then Mazda turbos BTW, thanks to V-tec, yo. That is why Hondas are faster. Now go change your oil.

18psi 01-29-2011 05:18 AM

I change the oil every time I shift gears

bad motors piss oil out the breather in boost.

To be safe you should change it before and after merging. The real question now is what oil brand are you going to use.

ok but you have to:

* do it in 4th gear from off-idle
* put cardboard in front of your car's mouth
* have your laptop on your lap
* have some greasy guy with opinions on tuning based on 4bbl carbs riding shotgun

I'm not sure what most of those have to do with oil but if you're going to do it, do it right.
