Why are supercharger kits so god damned expensive?
Seems like they're much simpler than turbo systems with fewer parts, but they still manage to cost twice as much.
Why?
Could one fab up a custom system for the same price as a turbo setup? I see used MP62s for cheap muneez all the time. What goes into it?

Most modern units also incorporate a subsystem to turn off the blower in order to conserve fuel. Machining a positive displacement, non-roots type blower (JRSC anyone?) requires extremely high precision tooling - instead of a spinny thing in a bearing, you have two spinny things that are spinning at the speed of plaid - and they're meshing perfectly with each other. Until someone other than kraftwerks designs a centrifugal system for the Miata market, they will have a monopoly, and there is no motivation to reduce pricing in a monopoly.

So one could fab up a custom system themselves? I found some m62s on CL for like 100 bucks.
I hate to ask such a noobish question, but what components go into a supercharger system that make it different from a turbo system?
From what I can gather (Ignoring fuel management, here):
-Supercharger (derp) and all the mounting brackets
-Pully for the blower
-Belt.
Are supercharger oil systems self-contained?

In my experience, blowers have been less trouble than my 80mm turbo setup.
You could fab your own kit as long as you can machine the brackets.
But, I think if you are going to invest your time into DIY, avoid doing a blower. Go turbo and build yourself a quality reliable system, which is the exact opposite of what i did.. a shop built over priced unreliable gay pos.

Not all blowers are self contained, I think maybe just Procharger & Paxton. I have ran a few blower setups myself, pre and post turbo setups. Self contained I grenaded (paxton). My current Vortech is the latter and is great. No issues yet though I will say I have thought about running a cooler before and aft of the blower. My oil just becomes heat soaked (is that the term) and can't recover.
In my experience, blowers have been less trouble than my 80mm turbo setup.
You could fab your own kit as long as you can machine the brackets.
