12v for long car rides?

m2cupcar 08-20-2007 10:13 PM

save yourself a buck fiddy and just grab the head with one hand and the plug wire with the other. you'll know if you have spark. hurts a bit but... eh.

oh and this is what Arkmage needs to test his timing.

Braineack 08-21-2007 11:20 AM

I just stuff a spark plug into the wire...easy enough.

or stuff a random wire up in the plug wire to make contact and let the other end sit near a ground point....you can see the arch from the wire.

Ben 08-21-2007 11:29 AM

yeah I think everyone here has stuck a screwdriver by the plug and strained to look for a spark. And when you don't see one, you readjust the screwdriver and try again.

This thing is cool because it makes the spark easy to see. Or not. And it's a buck fiddy.

I am going to get 4 and run them all the time to impress the kiddies at NOPi when I open the hood.

magnamx-5 08-21-2007 01:45 PM

i would get one but i would never pay shipping on one. i would have ot see it local for a 1.50

TonyC 08-21-2007 02:07 PM

harbor freight RULES like that.. i think i bought a heatgun there for $9? and a cordless screwdriver for.. $9!!!

I doubt that thing will fit down in the plug well.... I'll stick to Brain's idea and use the #4 wire.

y8s 08-21-2007 03:29 PM

yeah i realized that after thinking for 20 more seconds. it's got the wrong plug-side end.

It worked for Brian (Neo) after I suggested it to him./

Dude, that does hurt, I did that the first time I checked for spark. Felt like someone punched me in the chest pretty hard.

nah the oe boot plugs on to the diode then the new wire goes to the oe plug so you dont have to worry about your ignitors, + seems this would let you watch while running might be decent for a laugh.

his comment about me was in reference to checking timing with COPs... aka, no stock wires.

I'm pretty sure if the shock is just right it can stop your heart. I won't touch spark plug wires on a cranking/running vehicle.

I was using my 9 dollar heat gun from HF the other day when it started sounding like it was turbocharged. Damn thing went wild and started shooting lots of sparks out of it. Threw it down and unplugged it. Damn thing might have been used twenty times. I have got to wean myself off of HF. Thing is they just opened a store in my city.

I live 6 miles from work... there is a HF on the way home about 3 miles from the house. Trust me... it's hard to pass up when they have the sale banners out.

Here I was thinking every kid grew up with their dad using them to check the spark that way.
