Checking out a dyno shop
I found a shop 5 minutes from my house that builds spec Miatas and deals with Megasquirt tuning. He has tuned a few MSPNP already. Sounds perfect.
I'm going to check them out soon and I was wondering what I should look for. I have never been to a dyno before so I'm not sure if there are any hints to run away. I was quoted by the local import shop $400. The shop I'm checking out said $90 an hour and is expecting 2 hours. He said they don't charge for strapping down or wideband/egt sensors. |
Sounds perfect to me. There are 3 dynos in town here, MC, Image, and RevLine. Revline does pulls for 45, Image Autosalon specifically builds Porsches and charge 118$ for a baseline pull. MC does $140/hr for tuning I believe. Far as I know, none of the three know anything about Megasquirt.

Just like anything else you wanna see a nice professional looking work enviroment. It is also good to see a few fast cars around with work being done etc. Then look at the dyno itself if they have some kind of Jerry riged setup where you need to drive up wooden ramps etc that is bad. Are you going to be involved with the tunning? Even if you aren't i suggest you get aquanted with the soft ware first just in case they get stuck on something you might have the answer. 90 $ an hour is a good rate most around me charge 100 or so.

Sounds good then. He said he will let me tune the MS while he runs the dyno if I want. I'm going to try and figure out how to use the software now.

yeah do that! then you can ride shotgun and just say "speed up" "slow down" "hold at 5k" etc.
what kind of dyno is it? |
I don't know what brand yet, but this is what is posted on their website.
"We have a Single Axle (FWD or RWD) Land & Sea Chassis Dynamometer with 24” rollers 750 HP / 180 MPH / Water Brake with Servo Control 28 Channel EGT /Wideband O2 / Pressure / Flow / Temp Data Harness Unit is mounted above ground with 4 post lift for easy loading / servicing." I did some research and found it has everything I should be looking for. On a side note, I downloaded the megatune and log viewer. This actually looks really easy. I'm just reading to figure out what the fuel VE table is like. |
The dyno is made by Land & Sea. I've never heard of them. :dunno:

That is the extent of my knowledge about them though. |
I just got back from checking it out, I'm less than impressed. There was fabricating shit EVERYWHERE. He said he had just bought out a race shop and had no where to put everything. The place was just a major mess.
He did have about 7 Miatas there, some spec others shells. He was building 2 F prod cars. He had a customers car with a broken Link ecu that he was switching to MS. He joked about not finishing it on time, 2 months overdue. He said "he was a checkbook racer anyway". He also had a few Rabbits and a weird old car. The dyno had a rats nest of wires going from it to the computer. The o2 probe was just laying on the floor. The display was an old ass 12" monitor. He did say he was just starting to get set up. He said the guys from the local track are always there testing stuff out. I'm thinking the local import shop can do a better job. He seems to know what he is doing, but the shop doesn't look up to par. |
