Computer/user account help

So I never made a user account for my computer. I always just used the one labeled "Administrator", and everything was hunky dory.

Well I just made one for my girlfriend to use, and I thought it was weird since I could only make one that was also a computer admin. Well it turns out since I made one, the computer figured I didn't need the default "administrator" account, and now I can't log into it. I figure it will work again if I'm allowed to delete all the accounts, which windows of course doesn't let you do, you need at least one.

I can still find all my files under "administrator" in the documents and settings folder, but I'm not allowed to manually delete any of the other accounts.

What do I do to fix this?

Sorry this is written a little hastly, GF and I are running out the door to dinner, hopefully I gave enough details to help!

which version of windows?

iirc under xp, pressing ctl-alt-del twice at the quick user selector will get you to the classic login screen, where you can login as administrator

Yes this is XP. I think I remember that working, but only bringing you to the default login screen, which curreently only shows my GFs new account.

Fucking amazing...

I got a call from a client today who had just gotten back from vacation and was quite pissed that for some reason he couldn't log into the sysadmin computer on his audio network. Mind you, this machine not connected to the internet, and is in a secure room that only a half dozen or so people (including his assistant, who is a total dumbfuck) have access to. Claimed that his password (on the account he created on it) wasn't working, but more interestingly, the admin account (which we leave without password protection when we ship the machines) also was not working.

First time that's happened in 8 years of shipping this product line.

In the end, his IT guy found some software app for $49 that allowed him to bypass security. I didn't bother asking specifics (one of my techs was handling the situation by this point) as I was fairly annoyed with him and his accusatory tone.

As a result, I have nothing further to contribute, aside from the suggestion that enough googling might produce a $49 answer.

i've been a linux geek for 5 years now, but if i remember.. and apologies if this is condescending but..

don't delete accounts

when you bring up the default login screen, which you type your username (administrator), and no password, what happens?

iirc, autologin won't work on the admin account with a pw set, but it will autologin if there is only 1 account.. and fast user switching doesn't show the admin account.

also, nuking the SAM in the registry is... well, was, easy. Just lost access to anything encrypted since you were knocking out the system key.

Oh I forgot about the classic login system, which included typing your user name and password. I'll try disabling quick login, and using the admin username.

I never wanted to login at all. At one point it started making me click on "admin" to login, without a password, and I was pretty pissed. If I have one account, without a password? Why make me click on it!?!?!?

gooflophaze 08-07-2010 02:37 AM

again, if i remember correctly, it starts verifying logins / asking you to click if you have A. multiple accounts or B. saved network credentials

I turned quick login off, and I'm able to log in to the administrator account. It's also showing up in the "user accounts" section of the control panel. I gotta go, cause my GF is doing the whole fake snore thingy watching this.
