Why on earth would someone even have done this? They certainly never got to drive and appreciate the car, so it implies some sort of investment speculation. To protect such an investment, they had to house, insure, and safe-keep it for 28 years. If they had simply invested the (approx) $13K at the time, even with a paltry 3% return, they'd be looking at $30K value, and if they managed a 5% or 7% return, it would be over $51K and $86K respectively.

It's probably set in some Mazda dealers showroom floor as a showpiece for the past 30 years, then recently auctioned off and bought by this reseller that's now selling for 25 Grand

They are probably hoping some private collector is willing to buy it. Unfortunately, Jay Leno already has one

Judging solely by the photos, that's a shockingly low price for what appears to be a not-horrible car. Especially since AU$3,800 is US$2,666.

That would probably be listed for $25k in my neck of the woods. Diesel Excursions are stupid money, but V10 gas ones come with Cracker Jack boxes. Some people just REALLY want a diesel I guess.

The money is in unmolested 2000-2003 7.3 diesel 4x4's... something a person might actually want to tow with. They are very hard to find... a quick Searchtempest shows maybe 1/2 dozen in the country right now that I'd consider, except they kinda suck. A very good friend of mine has one. I've pulled a 30ft camper 600 miles with it and probably have another 300 miles behind the wheel... my Sequoia is superior to an Excursion in every way by an order of magnitude other than the tow rating and 7.3 legend... which does make a difference if you want to tow giant things, which very few people who buy Excursions actually do, and who almost nobody who puts on a lift kit and chrome dubs does, which is what turns off people looking for used ones who actually want to tow something.

^2008-2018 Sequoia's have almost no updates... I think in '18 they did a little bit with the dash and headlights, but otherwise in 11 years, exact same vehicle.

Everybody on the boards says the 7100lb tow rating is very conservative, and that the industry really needs to establish some measuring standards so that tow ratings can start to actually be about safety and not advertising. Considering that the Tundra has the exact same chassis and drivetrain, and can tow almost 11,000lb.

My tundra is only rated for 8,300 towing off the receiver, I believe. 2012 4.6 double cab.

My limited knowledge of how tow limits are generated by manufacturers will show here. I believe that braking performance is a heavily weighted metric, and that comes down to GVWR. I'm pretty sure that a 2wd short-bed short-cab version of any model is going to have the highest tow rating because it's the lightest... could be wrong. A Sequoia 4x4 Platinum is likely the heaviest version of anything that rides on the Tundra/Sequoia platform, so I'm gessing that's why it's so much lower... 3,000lbs lower tow rating than some Tundra models... same exact engine/chassis/drivetrain... and I still don't get it.

The 5.7 motor is a damned beast. I routinely have to pass on Kauai's 2-lane "highway" with people who insist on going 40 in a 50. The stepdown from 5th to 2nd around 35mph feels like a wheelie. My wife always takes a sharp breath, cringes, and grabs for something even when she knows it's coming and there's no oncoming traffic.

I've found it best to look at what the tow rating is elsewhere. The US rating always seems to be 20-30% lower for some reason.

Or you say ****it and tow whatever you want.

Indeed. Also, note how both cars are completely packed to the roofs inside.

Towing with a car tow dolly is very different than pulling a trailer. With a trailer you can get verying tongue weight and side to side motions, with a dolly, none of that is an issue. Towing capacity for saftey has to do with wheel base and brake performance. Longer wheel base is better.

Having towed extensively with a dolly I can say with certainty it can "push" for various reasons depending upon what you are towing. Having the wheels on the dolly in front of the dolly axle centerline makes a huge difference. I've had the dolly try to take the *** end of the truck to the woods on a straight road once an oscillation begins. Unnerving, just like any improperly loaded trailer.
