^oh yeah, I saw that... estimated 500,000 dollar restoration, and they can't use original, genuine parts. I think the estimates for the final auction sale are a little high. Maybe if it was original drivetrain, that would be an accurate estimate.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1465492765 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1465492765 I could go two ways with this. One would be to question how it would even be possible to spend $28k on that lump of iron. The other would be to sarcastically note "$28k in the motor, $2 on the oil filter." But yeah... It might not be a total nightmare (eg: the welding on the frame looks decent), but the only reason to price something like that at $40k is so you can claim to your wife that you're trying to sell it, but nobody is buying. And grumble something about the Obamony. |
You guys might be surprised. I have an uncle who has built/owned/sold at least a half dozen GT40 replicas. I googled and found a few of his FS threads -- in 2004 he sold an unpainted, unassembled roller for $38k. 2006 he sold a painted, partially assembled roller for $40k. In 2008 he sold a painted, assembled running car for $70k.

Heck, you can buy a *real* Ford GT, wrecked but repairable, for that money. |

Why? You can buy the "Deluxe" kits in roller form, brand new, from RCR or Superformance for that money.

Anyway, here's three of his that I found just now: Complete GTD Kit for sale - GT40s.com CAV GT40 Mono For Sale - GT40s.com GTD GT40 For Sale - GT40s.com As you can see, they are much closer to finished that the CL ad. So yes, CL is overpriced, maybe by $10-15k. |
It looks like quality parts (at the time, which have degraded due to storage and time) from a low-quality attempt at a project. I'm sure he spent a lot of money on these parts (nowhere near his claimed outlay). Old school power like that doesn't come cheap. However, the difference between taking over a project dumped in boxes and one that was actually planned and organized is worth at least $15k (when the final product could be $75k). If every bolt was missing from the original "kit", you could easily spend weeks and $1k at McMaster just figuring out what you need.
Also, I looked up GT40 prices. WTF. Why would you spend this much money on 1960's era tech in a non-authentic package? It's a recipe for massive depreciation, but that doesn't seem to be stopping the market. I'd rather have a real Pantera. |

These are the kinds of ads that tempt me. Fortunately I don't tend to make impulse purchases.
