Creative THinking Time!

So about once a month we end up with some extra parts that dont have boxes that are new, but we cant sell or really use anywhere. Heres what I have so far, whats your guys ideas?

2 X 1/4 HP Electric motors (double shafted)
2 X 1/8 HP electric motors (double shafted)
2 X 15x30 Copper coils.

Let hear those creative ideas.

a couple of NASTY van de graff generators :-)

Loki047 10-16-2007 10:08 AM

wow im surprised that came to mind, but i want something that is useful

awesome

how are those not useful? you could turn one on in your house, in front of your door, and run a wire form it to your newly fully insulated doorknob.

now it's not only a van de graff generator, but a youtube vid generator :-)

haha, rofl, id buy one of those just to use at my haloween party

devin mac 10-16-2007 10:30 AM

i have been planning on bulding one for years... like, a big one. minimum 400 or 500 thousand volts... maybe i'll finally get unlazy about it this winter... :-)

Joe Perez 10-16-2007 10:56 AM

What would Jamie and Adam do...

devin mac 10-16-2007 11:02 AM

van de graff. hands down.

they built one on the show once but it sucked ass. the size of the globe they used should have been capable of WAY more than the puny sparks they made. a steel globe that size should be able to handle building a half million volt charge...

Loki047 10-16-2007 11:18 AM

Alright well Im thinking of making a motorized shade for one of our windows (10 feet tall) which ill use later to make a retractible projector screen.

Then some racing bar stools, and i have a small coil that i can use for an oil cooler,

THe large coil is going to be an issue...

devin mac 10-16-2007 11:20 AM

bah.. you could be making sparks a couple feet long. don't pass up that opportunity... :-P

Loki047 10-16-2007 11:25 AM

hahaha no...

If you pay for shipping ill send you a motor

devin mac 10-16-2007 11:28 AM

hmm......... tempting, but i don't need yet another project right now... i'm sure i can source something locally during the winter months.

out of curiosity. specs on "electric" ? DC, AC? 2 phase, 3?

patsmx5 10-16-2007 12:33 PM

If you've got a couple 30X90 copper coils with say 3/4" tubing I'll take them. I'm wanting to build a solar water heater to use to heat my house. Don't know If it will ever happen but it's interesting to think about. It would be cool to have free heat.

Tubing we only use 5/8s and these happen to be 12x7 and 12x12. I was wrong on the sizes, i guess they reused some boxes.

FOr free heat, I would do a Water source heat pump. Run the condenser water through the hot water tank. Then throught the ground loop and back into the condenser. Free heat and really efficient.

Or solar panels from China, cheeeeaaaapppppp.

patsmx5 10-16-2007 01:05 PM

??? I'm confused on what your saying. Your saying it would take heat out of the ground, up to the tank, and then the cold from the tank goes back to the ground to heat up agian, correct?

I was thinking more along the lines of solar heat. Have a collector say 30X90 painted black inside of a box with a glass cover. The collector stands at a 45* angle. The sun shines through the glass and onto the black copper coils, heating the water inside of them. Hot water would exit the top and then go to the hot water tank. There would be a pipe at the bottom of the tank to return to the heater coils.

That would make hot water. Then have to build something to use the hot water to heat my house. I'm in a 500 sq ft. Insulated house, so it won't take too much to heat it.

Loki047 10-16-2007 02:25 PM

For 500 sq ft? Get some candles.

No this was an all about HVAC energy savings thing. If you just want hot water.

I would get an idea of what water temps you see out of the tap before seeing what you could do.
