Default Windows 10 + Tunerstudio + Netbook update

I'd been keeping my old Acer Netbook on Windows 7 and pretty much dedicated to Tunerstudio. I liked the machine itself because; 1. it's really light, 2. Really long battery life 8hr+ and 3. I hate to throw stuff out if I can find a use. I'd kept it on Windows 7 mainly because I hated 8 and didn't want to take the time, considering how little I used it to go up to 8.1. Toyed with the idea of just installing Linux and the Linux version of Tunerstudio but decided against it because it's just another operating system to gain proficiency with and my business life is pretty much centered around the MS stuff for computers. No Linux bashing please...

Because I'd installed Windows 10 Preview on another couple computers, and liked it I decided to see what the old Netbook could do.

1. Installed a spare SSD drive - 64 Gig to help boot times
2. I'd already maxed the RAM prior to the 2G and because the price for 4G 200 pin SODIMMS is out of sight will stay at 2G.

No other upgrades to the machine itself. Same old 10.1 display @ 1024x600 resolution.

Installed the Win 10 preview off a USB drive.

End result is I actually like the machine for what it is. A light, cheap, small form factor laptop that I can just throw in the car and pull out when the need arises.

1. Boot time, from no power to desktop = 17 seconds
2. Tunerstudio & Megalogviewer both start quickly and run fine

If you happen to have an old Netbook hanging around you can put some life back into it reasonably cheap.

I had a Lenovo netbook that I used for various similar purposes. The screen resolution finally got me to upgrade. Just couldn't deal with so little real estate.

Thats really cool. I kind of did the opposite. I snagged the acer c720 chrome book that has the i3 processor and threw a 128gb ssd in it and some linux on it (I used mint you should do yourself a favor and use ubuntu or arch as they're way ******* better supported on that computer). Of course like no tuning software supports linux natively (and the keyboard and trackpad of that chromebook dont work with windows) as well as windows so spool up a VM with xp on it. Even in the VM with a bit under 2gb of ram devoted to it and only 2 of the i3's cores it blows the ******* pants off the dual core atom netbook I had been using to tune with and so far has less connection problems than the netbook too. Like you can rotate the view a 3d table in AEM Tuner without it ******* lagging to ****.

Bahurd, curious if your netbooks general operating performance improved. I have a Asus EEE pc, the 1000HE and it has XP on it, and it has an archaic atom processor. It's slow to boot, slow to open chrome, can barely handle video on youtube, but tuner studio runs decently. If throwing in an SSD and installing Win10 can boost performance in those areas I'm going to have to do that asap to mine. I already have 2gb of ram in it.

In general, it's quite snappy considering what it was with Windows 7. Still has all the old resolution issues i.e. 1024x600. My model also has the Atom processor (N450 @ 1.66Ghz) and I'd upped the RAM earlier to 2Gb (max). I forget which SSD I had but it was an earlier unit @ 64Gb (Samsung if I recall).

It boots from off to the login screen in 17 seconds. From Sleep in 16 seconds. Not as quick as my newer stuff but it'll do for what I want it for.
