Damn crappy professors
 

nothing related to cars but im a little angry and need to vent. So I had all my midterms last week and in the 3 out of four classes that I dont even try I got an A in. The 4th class which i worked the hardest on (two 12pm-6am sessions) i have a C-!!!! The professor says she wants to see more work from me but what i dont understand is, I DID MORE WORK THEN ANYONE ELSE! The project involved doing some drawings and since (ive been told) i can draw well she expects more out of me then anyone in the class who cant preform as well. Is this fair? Sorry i needed to get that out...

unless it's some sort of art class i don't see how drawing skills can impact your grade

Its an Interior Design Class. Thats my major.

i'm an industrial designer and went to architecture school before that.

i can understand what you're going through. did the professor want to see more technical proficiency, personal style, or effort? sometimes it's difficult to determine that. i was fed up with architects telling me my style was too stylized so i took my talents to transportation and industrial design. i thrived. sometimes profs want to see your personal level rise, despite your skills compared to the rest of the class.

i like the pace of industrial design where architecture and interior design would drive me insane.

on the plus side of interior design, there usually a lot of nice trim in that major <wink, nudge>

tough it out, don't be afraid to challenge the profs. not to be judgemental, but i think architects have a viciously strong "god complex" that makes them insufferably boring.

thats rough. I just took a midterm for a class that has no book, the professors switch at midterms and the professor who wrote our test stopped teaching two weeks ago...... needless to say it was beyond most people in the class.

just when i start kicking around the idea of going back for my masters, things like this remind me that i really didn't enjoy school(at least not after i had matured a bit and focused on school and not just girls and parties:) )

me too. i want to get my masters in marketing, but i hate dealing with the bs.

same here but Im not even out, and i want to go to law school but the BS is turning me off...

this reminds me of a terrible experience from college...

in architecture, in my junior year, we all were presenting on zero sleep for the last few days. big projects. this prof was a notorious ass-clown, very mean.

this poor girl gets up and starts giving her presentation. after she finished, the professor sat for a few moments without saying a word. he casually got up and walked up to her and pressed a quarter in her hand and said,"you're going to need this to call your parents to tell them you're dropping out of architecture". the presentation was not that bad and she was a good student. she naturally ran out of the room sobbing. i remember thanking god i had volunteered to present first.

yeah grad school is kickin' my butt. but i guess that's what it's supposed to do. only in my 1st semester, started my first round of midterms. thank god for reading week (1 week break to catch up on reading).

Its unfortunate becasue she's a really great professor. She does things that challenge us and make us work harder and push our limits. The problem is she is really really smart and successful in her field (head architect at the smithsonian) so she teaches us like were on a graduate field. I understand she wants to push us to be better and work harder but she goes a little overboard. I have a feeling that she is doing this so that next time we will do even more work for a better grade, but i worked so hard this time that it makes me want to do the exact opposite. If im going to work so hard and barely scrape a C then why put any effort in at all? What really pushes my buttons is people who had Absolutely no design concept, desient drawings, a good presentation or put any work in at all got a higher grade! Its like she expects more out of me then anyone else and puts me to a higher standerd which is unfair. I guess ill figure out exactly what she wanted on monday when i have our meeting.

hahah sounds like it was in college for me. I majored in Advertising and know my way around photoshop and stuff. I would finish all my work days before everyone else and was expected to help the rest of the class. My prof. even convinced me to be a lab monitor so I could help others do work after class. too bad I played CS2 and listened to 36 instead.

I learned GPA means little in the real world. If you have a good portfolio then you'll have no problem.

I'm an engineering grad. student. Look at the perks of being at a university: most have machine shops that, if you make the right friends, are free to use and grab scraps from.

That guy was an ass clown. And not even an original ass clown. He stole that from the movie Paper Chase with John Houseman and Timothy Bottoms.

I would love to see that happen after a presentation, though I would feel bad for the girl. Sounds like something that happens in my roommates psychology classes. His professors are all insane. Only problems i have with my professors are them being foreign. I for some reason never learn anything from a foreign professor that i either didn't already know or can't comprehend through the accent. Text books are my savior, to bad I can't stand reading them.

yep, this is true.

i landed myself two excellent internships in college. by the time i graduated, it felt like those of us who found interships were miles ahead of the rest. our portfolios reflected that because we knew what companies were looking for and we had the right language and experience. one of those internships still gets me looks 8 years later.

in design, the ones with mad drawing skills will get hired fast, the ones with true innovation will last.

i dropped about $300-400 and over 60 hours on my last portfolio this month. i had to taylor it to this company and i was looking to kill with it. sad to say, as a designer, you HAVE to look the part too. awesome portfolio, excellent experience and track record, killer suit and attitude. it all helps.

Haha I built my whole turbo kit using the shops tools and materials :) I must have used a full tank of gas and a 5lb spool on the mig...

As for GPA the companies that really care about GPA are the ones that are not innovators, yes they are successful but not creating exciting things. CAT hires about 1/2 of my schools graduating MEs as long as their GPAs are above XX, but CAT creates nothing new EVER! just testing and re testing blocks designed 30 years ago.

I was offered an internship and turned it down because I didnt want to work or be associated with CAT. I took a less paying job with the head of the ME deparment who ended up getting contracted to do the same job I originally had at CAT. SO i got to do the same job anyways but for 2/3 less :(

to get a job as an Art Director (in advertising), you usually dont even send in a resume, just your portfolio. And it has to be something new, creative and original.

i had a kid right out of collge send me a resume via email with portfolio samples attached.

the title of the email said "Witness the Sickness"

i laughed, then pressed the delete key.
