Default darwin almost got one today

so got a pasma cutter for christmas mainly for work. a 17 year old clean up kid wanted to borrow it for a minute i said sure. about 5 minutes it felt like a bomb went off in our shop.

aparrenty he was using my cutter to take the top off a 55 gallon drum that was used for acetone it still had about 4 gallons in the bottom of the drum.

he's fine scared shitless a nissan 350z did not fare to well barrel slamed into the rear quarter panel. the kid is lucky my cutter didn't even get hurt.

Guess his application for NASA engineer didn't get accepted! Buh-rilliant.

Of course loaning the clean up kid a plasma cutter wasn't the brightest move either!

I would say that the acetone left in the drum saved his ***. If there had been more O2 in there it may have killed him. I work in a chemical plant and (this happened before I started working there) a guy cut some bolts off the top of a tank of Methanol with a torch. They say it split him in half when he got blasted through the pipe rack. Both pieces of him landed about 80 yards away.

I've seen that happen before, but with a gas drum. The lid flew about 50 feet and sliced through a shed. It was intense.

Hah! My next-door neighbor in CA, a Marine Captain, asked to borrow my angle grinder one way, with a metal cutoff disc. Didn't tell me what it was for, but I loan him tools all the time and he's usually pretty responsible.

Seems he thought that by removing the lid from a 5 gallon VP Fuel can, he'd have a great receptacle to hold coolant being drained from any of his bikes. Now, he made certain that the can was totally devoid of fuel by upending it and shaking out every last drop, but apparently didn't comprehend the explosive power of gasoline fumes.

He survived, as did the angle grinder. The can looked kinda funny afterwards however, and was no longer suitable for holding liquids.

Common sense is something a lot of people apparently lack. Hmmm, check the drum to see if you hear or feel any contents inside, and if not STILL DON'T CUT THE ******* LID OFF WITH A TORCH. Vapor is worse than the liquid. Natural selection at work. Sometimes nature fails at taking the dumb ones and they keep living to breed. Thats kind of mean, but I don't care.

Gawd damn... He did get lucky he didn't get hurt. WTF was he doing cutting the top off the barrel off? Just to do it? If so, get him to cut up a Hydrogen cylinder next. Just make sure he is in a secluded area. Won't happen again, I will guarantee this...
