Daycare ripoff?
 

Ok, so the daycare I'm taking my kids to is closing from the 24 Dec-1st of Jan. They are still expecting me to pay my weekly $350 during this period. Is it just me or is this extortion? I can't think of one business who stops servicing their customers for a week but still charges for the service. What gets me the most is now I have to take them to another daycare and drop another $350, so $700 for the last week of the year...ouch. I feel like I'm being cheated...thoughts?

No service = no pay. That's definitely bs.

They charge weekly? Most charge monthly and then call it how they want... Paying a bill for the week they're not working is wrong, but paying for the month with a week's holiday is the norm.

lol, its not in the contract. She stated the part that said all Holidays still pay out at full tuition. To which I replied, only the 25th is a Holiday. She then stated that all tuition is due on Monday. To which I stated, that has nothing to do with you being closed. The kicker is my Mom works for the Catholic church in town and she is part of some church group my Mom is in. She tried to bring up that fact when I was aurguing with her, I stopped her mid sentence and said, this is business lets not confuse this with personal matters. I still ripped her a new one, but relented to pay. Its extortion because I either pay or take my kids out of the school, thus bringing them into it. Pretty sure I'd find another day care... I know the holliday part is standard practice, but taking a week off? They should realize most of the rest of the world doesn't get to take the week off.

I've run into this several times. My son's daycare closed for some holiday and we still had to pay for the day. We went back and forth with them but in the end they always win.

How about taking your children out of that daycare and leaving them in the one that is open and only pay them?

you guys need to move out to nazifornia: daycare is so competitive here and they want your business so much they wouldn't DREAM of pulling bs like this on their customers.

Our daughter's daycare charges by the month. They will have people there next week, but have asked the parents to kindly let them know if we're planning to leave our kids there or not, so some of their staff can take vacation days if possible. You're paying for the full month either way but they leave it up to you whether or not to use it. That's how it should be done.

That is quite different from charging you on a weekly basis and telling you not to come in that week. It's a service industry. Would you pay $7 to Chipotle and then tell them, it's okay, you don't have to make me a tasty burrito? Fuck no you wouldn't. That whole-week-off shit wouldn't fly around here since almost every daycare has children of federal employees, who simply cannot be bullshat when it comes to knowing precisely which days they don't have to do any work. This year the only official holiday is Dec. 24. In years when the 25th doesn't fall on a weekend you only get the 25th off, though the President, in a grand gesture of benevolence, customarily dismisses employees at 2 pm on the 24th. The week of Dec. 26 through New Year's is not a fucking "holiday." Get to work, peasants.
