Debating on buying a VW Cabriolet 1992 for $500.00

I almost bought today a 1992 VW Cabriolet automatic with 110000.

The guy is asking $500.00 for the car. The good is the paint is in very good shape, the same with the top cover, seats and interior panels. It shifts very well for an automatic and drives very smoothly. If I buy it this would be my first convertible.

The car was driven all the way from New Hampshire to FL without any problems.

The bad, the A/C does not work, the heater only blows through defrost, other settings does not vent.

There is some weird noise on the fuel pump (although it is brand new), he changed it but still sounds very loud, more so when it heats up. I think it is a clogged filter inside the tank making it work to much. He states the fuel pump inside the tank must be changed as if the car has two, but I know at least that those cars is outside the tank and is only one, underneath the rear passenger seats.

The front rotors need replacing and the radiator gauge does not work, the radio needs to enter the code as it shows the classic ERR bla bla that one must enter if the battery is removed, he does not know the code. So the radio is useless until a code is found.

What is holding me back is I do not know anything about VW and less so about Cabrios. The car looks super cool, but I am just terrified of german engineering. Last Jetta I had there was no way to get rid of check engine light and ended losing a lot of money on its sale.

Here are a few pics on how the car looks like (this is not the car...) but is very similar>

Like stated this is not the car, just a representation on how it looks like, the one he sells DOES NOT have aluminum wheels, has hub caps. The paint is red and almost on the same condition with no dents.

Does anyone have experience on these cars?

What do you think about the purchase?

I knew a girl in high school that had one, it sounded like a 5gal pail of bolts going around a corner.

Are you a lesbian who can't afford a Forester?

Supergay

A gay french teacher at my school drives one of those, as does a 16 year old girl.

I love it. A friend of mine back in High School had one (well, it was 80s vintage, diesel, and white) and he was definitely a ladies man.

And yeah, it sounded like a bunch of hammers in a cement mixer.

These are easy to work on. Not as cramped as the current VAG stuff, and relatively simple engine management.

The engine is a wheezy, breathless little mill that just begs to be trashed upon.

I'd say hit it and enjoy the man (or men) in your life.

Those are way gayer then a Miata. Id still own one though, kinda like them.

I really like the front ends on those. I'd buy it... needs moar boost though.

Some douschenozzle tried to race me on Saturday on I95 in traffic in one of those. I just gave him the finger and continued at my 35mph while he was trying to swerve in and out of lanes.

The vehicle is from someone at work, not even his wife drives it because of the whinning noise from the fuel pump, but it does look much better in person than in pics. Almost sure the problem is the filter on the fuel tank.

The seats are in very good condition, about the engine how it sounds it is true, very very loud. Even when you crank the starter its like turning on a diesel truck, seems as if the starter is gonna come out the hood.

I have read the engines are very solid, but the sound they make its scary. I had to look twice on the engine bay to make sure it is fuel injected as it sounds more like carburated.

The engine bay seems very easy to work on, a few bolts and that engine is out.

for $500 you cant beat it...I would buy it to drive it every day, its only $500

GTI = original hot hatch, sleeper, extra cool points.
Cab = Daddy's little princess.

I'm gonna laugh my ass off when you start a thread that begins:

"I actually decided to drive with the top down for once, and was at a light when a truck full of hillbillies pulled up next to me right as Diana Ross's "I'm Coming Out" came on the radio..."

Get it and get rid of the slushbox for it will leave you stranded soon. They are pretty easy to work on but you need some special tools. I get mine from ebay or ecstuning. Also if you want to get it you should become familiar with vwvortex. Lots of good things on there. If you get it (which I would...500 bux and the thing has no rot is kinda like stealing from him) just have some patience, and do a vr6 swap ;)
