Decided not to turbo my Miata

After researching and starting to build a motor to turbo, I decided to sell everything. I didn't lose any money. I sold the shortblock for everything I had in it. I decided spending the amount of money I was going to spend on the miata would be better spent elsewhere. I probably end up putting a turbo kit on the STi and just keep the miata for a commuter car.

I still won't go back to the other forum. I'll stay here for when I need something for the car.

I am just going to leave the drivetrain stock. I will add the GAZ coilovers to it, but that is the last mod I will do the the car.

I'm assuming you were going to run big power in your Miata with all the engine building and $?

I agree- my 99 was normally aspirated with a wire-in Link. Made ~180chp and weighed 2100 (no ballast). Lots of fun.

I had a GT28R and figured that would be fun for the street. The more I got into it the more I started to do, so I scrapped the whole project. I was thinking a 5-6k project. I was quickly looking like 15-20k project(total for the car). I will just use the mod budget for a house downpayment in a year or two instead.

Wow. I've got just over $4k in my engine swap and turbo setup (including my Link ecu) and could do it cheaper the next time around (lots of unused parts). But the engine is JDM salvage and the turbo is a used T3/T4, chinese manifold, all mild steel tubing, lots of eBay stuff new/used. Definitely a budget project. Have yet to find the weak points (besides my knowledge of the ecu and tuning). We'll see. - rob

It can be done cheaper than I was doing it, but I also had future plans of ~28psi pumping through the motor. That gets expensive in a hurry. I just totally lost interest in the project. I guess my priorities are changing. I just don't see the point in building a car anymore. I will continue to hang around on this forum and nasioc just to keep up with whats going on.

Yeah- big boost = big dollars.
I fully understand. It's probably the reason I ended up turning my first Miata into a showroom stock race car instead of modifying it for the street. Big power on the street is useless the majority of the time. I think that's why a lot of the guys who track their Miatas seem content with a reliable 200-250whp. That will stomp most cars/drivers at track events. - rob
