Discovery Channel: Storm Chasers!
I'm out in Colby Kansas right now on business (Lucky me.) Just arrived in town, pulled into my hotel parking lot, stepped out of my car and turned around to see this sitting in an adjacent lot behind me! I know that truck!! Grabbed my camera and off I went.
Come to find out they're about to finish off filming another season of the show, which will air next year I believe. Talked to some of the crew and they're a really cool bunch of guys, but still no success in the IMAX shots yet. http://jugrnot.com/IMG_9744.jpg http://jugrnot.com/IMG_9745.jpg http://jugrnot.com/IMG_9746.jpg Really cool. Talk about right place, right time. They're getting ready to head out right now, and have no idea where they're going yet. |
I don't see how anything including that thing can survive a direct hit of any decent size tornado.
WTF's up with the prongs on the side, are those really supposed to hold it steady? It's still cool you saw it though, kinda like seeing the Weinermobile or one of those cars people glue all sorts of things too. |
wow, it looks ghetto as fuck in your pictures :gay:
tim, it's not supposed to be hit by the tornado, it's just supposed to be able to be fairly near one. |

I like the tornado kills painted on the side of the truck. That's a job I wouldn't mind having for a year or so to have the experience. Vash- |

Those outriggers probably just help keep it from tipping over. That's generally what outriggers are for. We have ones about 10x the size of those on our company crane truck.

I've done it in central OK. Its fucking awesome dude, fucking awesome. However, it kinda sucks to be a passenger when hauling ass down dirt roads in bugtustle, OK in a 3/4 ton suburban.

Damn, thats awesome! lol. I can imagine sitting passenger on a tornado chase on some of those roads must suck bigtime. Do you have any pictures or anything from when you did it? I'd love to look into being a part of a crew somehow. That has got to be a great adrenaline rush, seeing a fucking tornado a couple hundred yards away, and coming right at you! :eek5:

That shit looks like a tank gona gay, but it's kinda funny though.
I'd love to do something like that for a little while. |
Wish I would have gotten some pictures of the inside. The truck is built off a ford superduty chassis, and yeah it does look ghetto up close but its a couple years old and has been beaten to shit. The guy built it out of his own pocket, then discovery channel found him.
Looks like they're on the right track around here, we're under all sorts of crazy ass tornado warnings around where I'm staying right now. Thank god I always take my scanner with me out on the road. Theres been like 7 touchdowns out in colorado already, and it nearly wiped a city out. They've built a TIV2 but had some mechanical problems with it lastnight, they were supposed to meet back up later. IIRC The TIV weighs over 12,000 pounds but I don't think they're expecting to get directly hit by a tornado.. I'd hope they don't anyway. Super cool shit and I defiantly envy their job right now. |

That thing reminds me of a MRAP (mine resistant ambush protected)
Attachment 212991 At 50,000LB and enough armor to shrug off most IED, I would much rather face a tornado in the MRAP. |

This is not how I would describe being in an active area patrolled by Tornado Chasers. Call me cautious :)
If it makes you feel any better, there were over 10 tornados within 100 miles of that town... |
I've seen plenty of tornado's. I almost was sucked up in one.
I think it is cool to watch. But I'm not going to drive a truck close to one. I lived 5 miles from Marmaduke Ar. That was hit two years in a role. We heard a tornado going through the woods behind our house a night. That sucked. Did anyone see the video of that dumb guy running towards a tornado. It was recent and I think in Kansas or somewhere like that. He was stupid. |
