Does anyone have experence with damaged shipments?

I shipped a gauge to a member here using USPS flate rate envelope, and he got it with a hole in the envelope and a sticker that said we apalogize that this mail peice was recieved unsealed at *** post office. Now I had this sucker wrapped up GOOD when I shipped it, and it has this huge tear in it, like it was friggin run over by a truck.

Now my question, what do we (me and the buyer) do? I printed the label with paypal, and that includes insurance, correct?

Insurance is extra with USPS, IIRC, you have to pay for it.

miatanutz 11-26-2007 08:55 PM

Without paying extra for insurance youre shit out of luck.
Its best to ship items like that UPS. The first $100 of coverage is automatic.
Even then collecting can be a hassle and take some time.

go in there and rip one of them a new asshole and stick that sticker on his back

The post office? I should. Go freakin postal on the post office!

But really, it looks like they stabbed my package with a pen.. repeadly. Bastereds

paul 11-26-2007 09:11 PM

but you'll notice it must have been one of those pens with a retractable ink cartridge so you wouldn't catch on. but you've outsmarted them with your Columbo like skillz of observation. bravo.

Fuck UPS. With the USPS, they just ripped the package; UPS would have installed the gauge in one of their trucks and then told you that it was perpetually in transit.

I will never ship with UPS again (I think there's a thread here somewhere regarding UPS). The damage a $200 product I bought that was insured, picked it up from me for claims, and then proceeded to tell me for the next year and half that they had no record of the shipment or the claim. This was said with a copy of the shipping label and pickup/return label. It was virtually impossible to get anywhere with anybody there and I probably spent far more than $200 of time trying to get something- seller was making the same effort. We ended up splitting the difference.

miatanutz 11-27-2007 05:37 PM

I do shipments all over the country all the time. UPS has broken or lost a couple of them. Same with Fedex. Both have never failed to pay, even shipments worth $300-700, although some time is needed to make it happen.
A good friend owns a shipping company..he ships worldwide. His motto "never ship anything you give a shit about with the post office".
UPS and Fedex are the best way to go.

i used to work for ups and i'll never ship anything through them because i know first hand how they'll treat you packages. shit gets thrown, stepped on, torn open (sometimes on purpose), light boxes that are large get placed on the bottom of walls of other heavy packages crushing them, they often get placed in the wrong trucks so your 3 day package ends up being more like 6 cause they cant find it. management doesnt seem to care much about the way packages are handled as long as the warehouse isnt backed up. goodluck using ups...

I bought a $1500 turbo and got it shipped UPS with insurance. The box ripped open and they repacked it (the parts they could find) in two smaller boxes. In the end I got 95% of a turbo system and my $1500 back.

You have just described EVERY single carrier in the entire world.
I have worked around freight handling much of my life...inlcuding working with UPS, Fedex, and nearly every carrier you see cruising down the highway.
None of them really give a shit...trust me.
The trucking commerce laws are written in favor of carriers to some degree. If you made it so every package had to be 'on time' and 'in one piece' or the carrier was 100% responsible, everything you now enjoy would skyrocket in price...or carriers would cease to exist. A % of error is guaranteed., its the nature of the business.

The other ugly side of this coin is all the scumbag claims from scam artists
that carriers deal with. Dont think that doesnt happen either.

Like I said, I have worked with most of the major carriers. I ship every day to areas all over the USA. For daily tracked shipments UPS and Fedex are the best. Period. Are they perfect? Nope. NONE are. The phrase to remember is A % of error is guaranteed

i just lost $200 over a broken part done in by Greyhound. shipped a 6' long exhaust (titanium) and somehow they BROKE one of the exhaust flanges. it's like someone stepped on my exhaust. no way to claim. i'm basically fucked.
