Did you get a proposal from the contractor you know yet? $800-ish per window installed sounds like a lot to me. An amateur hack like myself can do a window in about 3 hours with no real assistance, so I would assume a pro could do the same. At $100/ hour for labor, that leaves $500 each for the windows. My 32 x 48 wood-clad Andersens were about $250 each.

I did them 2 years ago, and I don't know the rules for the rebate. Probably don't qualify - If it's like anything else I touch, I'm lucky to not have to pay a penalty. They are LIGHT-YEARS better than the OEM windows from 1977.

I haven't done ANY research at all on the rebate or energy savings with new technology. It would be kind of interesting to find out what kind of measurable benefit would accrue from the rebate-worthy stuff vs others. I burn 1100 gallons of oil for heat and hot water in the average year; wonder how much that would be reduced by better windows?

not sure, but windows that do qualify take a lot of guesswork out of selecting a good window because the nfrc already did all the tests for you without taking into account all the hype and bullshit every manufacturer will tell you. plus the tax credit itself would be cool to take advantage of even if you spend more you'll get a good window at a discount

No question 30% tax credit is a big incentive. I need to read more about this stuff - although I'm not replacing windows again anytime soon.
