Drinking and working

How does your drinking and working (on your car) ritual go?

Oscar 03-10-2009 05:32 PM

I drink when done working on the car. I'm already stupid enough when sober..:)

Miatamaniac92 03-10-2009 06:47 PM

Depends. An oil change can be done during/after a few, anything more complex and I wait.

I went over to my boss' house to install my new suspension a year or so ago. Him and my friend had a bunch of beers, I only had one. By the end he was laying under my car (no where near the suspension) laughing cause he couldn't get out cause his beer belly was wedged under the door frame.

I drink while working on my car...you have to. Wtf are you working on your car for if not an excuse to drink?

I do stop working at some point though. There is definitely a point of no return with the drinking/working on the car.

Perfect excuse to hang out in the shop. Not that I need an excuse, and now that I have an air card for the tuning laptop, there's no reason to come inside.

none of those poll options say "a beer" which is about what i get half way through while working on my car.

Saml01 03-10-2009 09:51 PM

I usually smoke a cigar.

Joe Perez 03-10-2009 10:39 PM

I tend to consume beer at a fairly linear rate while I'm working on the car. And yes, I've noted that an inverse relationship between the number of beers consumed over the preceding two hours and my productivity. (Fortunately, no serious injuries have occurred, though there have been some shitty looking welds.)

sixshooter 03-10-2009 11:18 PM

I use beer to self-medicate busted knuckle soreness.

pdexta 03-10-2009 11:22 PM

Unless it's going really good or really bad, I try to wait til after I'm finished.

A wise man once said, "Put some alcohol on it!"

If I'll be doing menial or tedious stuff I'll crack open a beer or two, but if any brain power is required I'll hold off until the work is done.

The title of the thread mentions nothing about cars, so I was expecting a bunch of replies from people who drink during their day jobs, like carpenters and painters. :D In grad school I used to drink then work (Friday afternoon beer hour) but my current employer frowns upon that type of thing.

Faeflora 03-10-2009 11:54 PM

I usually pick up an eight ball and start hitting it n wrenchin'. When it's time for the shakedown run nothing's better than boost and a big bowl of salvia. :)

Bond 03-10-2009 11:58 PM

A beer and a dip. Works everytime.

While changing the fuel pump and injectors. ;)

If it's standard shit, like oil changes, suspension, etc. I'll have a few. If it's new to me, like learning to weld while fabbing up my exhaust, I don't need a buzz.

Get the car up and secure on stands, then crack one open. The rate of consumption changes dependent on complexity of the project, or the chances of it being done that day. If there is a chance the car will be drivable, then no beer.

If its major surgery, I stay sober. However, little shit involves a large dose of #4 from the 512 brewery. Actually, over the last few weeks pretty much anything I've done involves a large dosage of beer. It also helps that the brewery is roughly 1500' from my local eddy control dyno of choice. Large amounts of brew are consumed after dyno play-time.

gospeed81 03-11-2009 12:54 PM

I measure any job by how many beers it's going to take to do it.

Ex:

Oil Change - 2 beer job (second after done just to hang out in the garage some more)

Brake Pads - 3-4 beer job, usually split a sixer with a friend

Shocks - 6 pack job with hydraulic spring compressor, 0 beer job with suicide sticks

MS - Fuck me, I could have killed a 12 pack last night trying to make that shit run
