if that was a 5.6, i really wonder what the 1906 earthquake felt like. the earthquake lasted a good 10 seconds, i freaked out and jumped in my closet hahaha ><

the last real earthquake i felt was the loma prieta earthquake, and that was a 6.9M if i recall. lots of damage from that one.

I was about 60 miles from a 7.2 back in Alaska when i was in highschool, craziest natural disaster i've been around besides driving past a tornado in edmonton.

Part of the state is burning, part of the state is shaking violently, California just can't get a break...

For the longest time I figured it was going to have a giant earthquake and sink into the Pacific, but now I think the odds are leaning more against burning down.

OR maybe they'll just break off from the rest of the US to go hang with Hawaii, Alaska can come too...

THE END

We had one in GA about 5 or 6 years ago, no kidding. It was a little one, but it happened in the middle of the night, so I woke up to this unreal grinding/growling noise. The shaking wasn't so bad as much as stuff in the house was vibrating and rattling around. It scared me for a minute, then I assured myself that it was all a dream, and I went back to sleep. Found out it was a quake when I watched the morning news.

I guarantee you, that was NOT the "BIG one," which we call the MCE (Maximum Credible Earthquake). It's okay though, the MCE for CA is actually less than the MCE for the CSE (central and southeastern) US (think New Madrid, 1812 and Charleston, 1886). Check out the probabilistic seismic hazard maps from USGS. Cool stuff.

While we're not sitting on any substantial fault zones here in GA, we are within the region of influence from a couple of nasty seismic sources. Believe it or not, but every semi-important (non-residential) new building here will have to have significant seismic detailing starting soon (I think next year, but maybe 2009), and high-impact buildings (hospitals, fire stations, etc.) are already designed for a moderate seismic load.

Wood houses are less likely to be destroyed by an earthquake than concrete or brick...
