Ebay SSQV

So i've been looking to get a BOV for my turbo. I like how it sounds but 250 bucks is a bit pricey for a bov from hkss website.

Anyhow so i saw some one selling an old model HKS SSQV i decided to email the seller whos name is spelled trubo, yes trubo...

Dear snail_trubo,

So is the piston and the cylinder inside the BOV aluminum or plastic?

- tripzter

Dear tripzter,

Flange, Hose, Adapter, Hardware - all are aluminum

- snail_trubo

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmm aluminum hose? Fun stuff :bowrofl:
i emailed the seller back.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear snail_trubo,

The hose is aluminum too? come on guys seriously?

- tripzter

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
we'll see their response

that aside what do you guys recommend that sounds similar to the ssqv thats worth the money and wont break a week later? Does forge make anything similar?

buffon01 09-02-2010 09:10 AM

BOV were not made for sound, that's ricer shit.

chicksdigmiatas 09-02-2010 09:30 AM

First of all, the piston is plastic. Second of all, you will get tired of the ricey noise it makes and take the noise maker out of there, then it will sound like all the other blow off valves. But they do work fine.

18psi 09-02-2010 09:54 AM

I think the joke is on you for expecting a fleabay vendor to actually know what they're selling.

They don't make them. Heck, they probably never even seen one in person. It comes from some factory in china in a box, they slap their sticker on it, and post it on ebay. That's about it.

You're lucky the seller even knows how to speak a little english.

Oh and ssqv is insanely ricey and sounds gayer than a bag of dicks. lol

cardriverx 09-02-2010 02:22 PM

go with a forge man, I love mine.

Jeff_Ciesielski 09-02-2010 03:11 PM

A de-whistled SSQV is actually one of the quieter valves on the market. I liked mine.

wayne_curr 09-02-2010 03:25 PM

My RFL whistles and I cant stand it. How do you de-whistle these things?

Jeff_Ciesielski 09-02-2010 03:27 PM

On an HKS you take off the front cover and remove the 'fin'. A RFL is just going to be like it says. REALLY FUCKING LOUD. You could probably fit some sort of filter on the end of it to provide muffling.

I like the way it sounds in every way except the fucking whistle. If I could just get rid of that i'd be happy.

I dont think it has any kind of fin inside. It just has a horn that, if removed, does nothing.

Same here.

LOVE mine

triple88a 09-02-2010 04:08 PM

what forge do u all recommend? i've been eyeing those things but every video i hear they sound like some one unhooked a hose on an air compressor. uck

and yes i emailed the seller just to get a laugh.

leatherface24 09-02-2010 04:34 PM

my greddy RS makes a manly purposeful sound like a blow off valve should sound. no whistle queefing here

rider384 09-02-2010 04:52 PM

If you're going to go with ebay BOVs I would recomend nothing other than RFL. Despite being Really Fucking Loud, it is a simple design with only 3 parts: The housing, spring and piston. This thing honestly couldn't get any simpler, and even though I got mine for 40 to my doorstep, I honestly don't think it could be built any better, you'd have to be TRYING to make one of these bad quality.

buffon01 09-02-2010 05:11 PM

I have the regular Greddy knock-off. Works fine. I got it for about $40 also, with an adapter pipe, an extra flange, and the vacuum hose.

rider384 09-02-2010 05:42 PM

Do you have aruminum vaccume hose? Seriousry though, since they're chinese they're obviousry going to be some bad ones. The ones that work do so very werr, but I'd stirr buy the one with the reast chance of not working out of the box.

ShadowZ 09-02-2010 09:14 PM

Has anyone run one of the Tial Q bov? I saw it on BEGi's site and hadn't heard of it before but it looks pretty sweet.

dude cut the horn off, that should shut it up.

18psi 09-03-2010 12:30 AM

I agree: simple = gets the job done.

Leaves little for the chinamen copiers to screw up;)

triple88a 09-03-2010 12:39 AM

Do any of the forge valves have a bit of whistle to them?

18psi 09-03-2010 12:41 AM

here's what mine sounds like:

http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g9...h_MVI_0448.jpg

It KINDA has a little distinct whistle to it.
I absolutely love the way it sounds.

I seriously get asked ALL THE TIME what bov I'm running.

forge = WIN

triple88a 09-03-2010 01:25 AM

Sweet, exactly what i'm looking for, what forge bov do you have exactly?

Faeflora 09-03-2010 01:32 AM

Fucking wrap a sock around it. You don't even need to waste a zip tie; just knot the sock up on it.

Looks like a diverter valve, but its adjustable.
Has 3 different rate springs.
Just looked on their site and couldn't find the exact same one.
I'm sure you can find one used for a decent deal.

The ONLY other bov that I love (and would run on my car if given the chance) is the TiAL....

triple88a 09-03-2010 06:11 PM

Well i tried to contact PAT and i've had no luck. Mail box is full.

mazpr 09-03-2010 06:36 PM

Regardless of the internet online arguments, I like that engine bay.

I dig the black compressor, the silver blades stand out!

18psi 09-03-2010 06:38 PM

Thanx
I added a black intake+gray filter to it now cause I can't be driving around with no filter for ever.

Who is PAT?

triple88a 09-03-2010 07:50 PM

PAT! is the vendor here that works at forge

cardriverx 09-05-2010 01:15 AM

http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/con...uct=FMDV001GTI

Thats the once I have. It sounds more like a woosh, with a faint pshh. I hate the squealing of the hks type ones, so thats part of the reason I like it.

Second reason is that they are built great. I took mine apart to check it, and the piston / o ring / machine quality is exceptional. Easy to overhaul, and it seals 1000x better than the ebay one I had before.

Also, they sell a spring kit, so you can fine tune it for your boost levels / car.

triple88a 09-05-2010 11:49 AM

something that i dont like about those bovs is what about idle and low loads when in vacuum and they are open?

cardriverx 09-05-2010 02:22 PM

Originally Posted by triple88a (Post 625982)

They usually don't leak much, thats what the spring is for. That doesn't matter anyway, you are running an adaptronic (which I assume you are using a MAP sensor with). So it won't mess with your ECU at all if it leaks a little at idle.

triple88a 09-05-2010 02:35 PM

i dont care about it since its only a map sensor in the intake manifold but i care about unfiltered air going in my engine, thats all. Well anyways just ordered 1.

triple88a 09-10-2010 06:14 PM

Well i just got my bov. Now i get how it works. There is the regular piston controlled by the vacuum thats outside, there is also another piston inside the big piston. The outside piston is like a master of the gates. When its closed, both are closed. When its open the inside one still remains closed. The outside one is the one with a lot of force on it and thats controlled by the vacuum. The inside piston has little force just enough to keep it closed when the outside piston is open. During regular vacuum operation, the outside piston is open, the inside is closed. When you spool that turbo up, and let go of the gas, the vacuum pulls the outside open, the inside is then pushed back by the pressure build up inside the pipes forcing it open. The real question is how much pressure is required to push the inside piston open or will i still be surging if i dont step on it?

Faeflora 09-10-2010 10:36 PM

At least 3000000 pounds of cake are required for fullfillment of such exhibitory feline activities. Such soup is often a pain in the ass; remember to put lids on it!

Mine sounds exactly the same and I hate the little chirp. I have it re-routed which seems to have gotten rid of the chirp. I'd rather just vent it in order to have less piping, but that damn whistle is so ghey

triple88a 09-12-2010 01:37 AM

cant you add 2-3 inches of hose to the end of it and still vent it? That should get rid of the whistle. From what i can think of the whistle is caused by the air hitting the outside edge of the horn. Also isnt that bov open in vacuum as its made to recirculate?

18psi 09-12-2010 01:39 AM

I can't imagine anyone hating the way a forge sounds.

different strokes for different folks I guess.

i love it

triple88a 09-12-2010 01:48 AM

yeah i gotta see what mine will sound like. I go the dump valve type. I sure hope it doesnt sound like an air compressor :barf:

I have this one, and it sounds like...

Oh and chicks dig straight-cut gears, with a stock exhaust.

What the hell happened to the quality of my video? It's been on youtube a long time, but has never been that crappy looking!

triple88a 09-12-2010 04:15 AM

sweet thanks, i'm surprised you're getting such a whine out of the turbo.

Bryce 09-12-2010 04:43 AM

A whine? You mean the sucking sound? That's because the air filter is right above the clutch master cylinder on the stock greddy setup. I do miss it being that noticeable.

triple88a 09-12-2010 12:14 PM

nah man i hear the sucking sound and then i also hear a whine also. Whine is throughout the entire rpm range though.

dgmorr 09-13-2010 11:25 AM

Shouldn't it stay closed with the correct spring?

triple88a 09-13-2010 05:24 PM

No i believe it should stay open when in vacuum as those valves are made to recirculate so it does not really matter if its open. The dual spring design is the one that is made to stay closed.

Bryce 09-13-2010 07:19 PM

That whining sound was my slowly-failing transmission. I pray that I never hear a sound like that come from my turbo.

chicksdigmiatas 09-13-2010 08:58 PM

What kind of BOV is this doood running.

triple88a 09-14-2010 01:06 AM

No idea man Savington doesnt seem to want to give it up ggrrrr

18psi 09-14-2010 01:57 AM

TiAL

chicksdigmiatas 09-14-2010 09:15 AM

Well thats what i was thinking of anyway. Fucking ricey piece of shit on my car now gets annoying.

triple88a 09-28-2010 11:35 PM

Well i installed my Forge Bov right on top of my Track Dog IC... I gotta say its silent... I do have some turbo surge at lower pressures where there isnt enough of pressure to get the plastic valve open. Any fixes for that are welcome

chicksdigmiatas 09-29-2010 12:00 AM

After hearing and seeing tials in real life, that is the only way to go. /thread

Doppelgänger 09-29-2010 09:04 AM

If anyone is looking for a cheap cost, but good quality BOV, NOPI has a RFL knockoff for like $40 that is all metal and is a good bit quieter than a real RFL. I have the real RFL and like it... I also have a real Greddy RS that is OK. I swap them out ever now and then just for fun.

triple88a 09-29-2010 04:07 PM

Well today i decided to give it some boost and rpms.. I can somewhat hear it at 6 psi at 6k rpm drop

Doppelgänger 09-30-2010 07:30 AM

loosen the adjustment of the bov?

arctct 09-30-2010 08:15 AM

i talked to FM about my whining after installing their 10lb flywheel... they say really light flywheels produce that noise and so can hard engine bushings / diff bushings... it looks like this guy has a 7lb flywheel in his signature... :2cents:

chicksdigmiatas 09-30-2010 08:28 AM

Well it could be that. Before my countershaft bearing failed, it sounded like a supercharger. Then it would squeak and make other weird noises. I was driving to school one morning cruising in 5th going up a hill then i hear a grind noise and my revs go real high. Then i shift to 4th and it works a little then nothing. I pull over and try to see if i can limp in first and it just ground and went no where. But it was ok. I scored another 5 speed of unknown condition for 50 bucks and it shifts like butter. It has for 40k. I found that the lucas gear oil works great in my 5 speed along with that oil stabilizer. I am thinkng about trying that in my 6 speed. Anyways, to get to my point. I put that oil stabilizer in there and it quit whining as much. It is still does a little, but oh well, shit happens.

arctct 09-30-2010 08:31 AM

nice find^

i like the way the tial sounds... for sure my choice for external wg and bov on my next setup! tial = quality

Bryce 10-02-2010 02:15 AM

There aren't any external adjustments on that forge. You must remove all the allen bolts and change out springs for the main piston. Did yours come with any other springs to swap in? Mine had two other springs, bought it used. Whichever one is in mine worked perfectly at any boost level on my greddy turbo and 1.6.

Next time I get a chance, I might try a Tial. I have the utmost respect for their quality, but why fix a problem that doesn't exsist?

triple88a 10-03-2010 04:58 PM

I bought mine directly from forge and no it did not come with any other springs.
