Electronics gurus, how to convert 12v to 15v

I want to know if anyone thinks this is possible to set up some type of inverter/capacitor setup that would take 12ish volts and jump it up to 15 volts constantly at around 10 amps or so without dropping a bunch of cash on a standalone box like speedwaymotors sells. It would be wired for momentary application. Basically like this,

How accurate does the 15V have to be? Most alternators have a 14.4 V setpoint.

Without any real knowledge of your application I'll say that 1A can be done quick and cheap, but 10A requires more substantial electronics which costs. If you can buy something off the shelf for $100 or $150 that comes with a warranty then it probably makes sense to go that route. Certainly something could be put together for less, but it would take an investment of time and effort.

What you want is called a boost converter. Finding one that can source 10 amps that's off the shelf and with any sort of guarantee won't come cheap.

It would be easier to hack your alternator to charge at 15.5V and regulate it down to 14 for the rest of the car.

No it wouldn't. He only needs 10A @ 15.5V, whereas the rest of the car may demand >50A.

This isn't hard.
The device Y8s linked to will work so long as you can guarantee that "12v" never rises above 14v. The device Jeff linked to will work so long as you EITHER can guarantee that "12v" will never rise above 15v, or you can tolerate excursions above 15v.
