F*^$ Humidity, moving back to the desert
So we are moving to Albuquerque. Never thought I'd say that ever. The wife and I are tired of the south. She's from here, and I am not. I'm curious as to what stuff there is car wise in NM? I figure there is cars and coffee type stuff, I'll pass on the 1am saturday night jerk fest, but I know there is a small race track in the area. I lived in Clovis NM for a short time and have been in and out of the area. Curious what people have to say.
I know there are the usual "no don't move" things, but we have lived in various places across the country and Italy for a few years. We have decided to live in a place that allows us to do things we enjoy. Basically mountain bike, hike, Jeep trails, travel to Colorado/Utah, etc. The decision to move is final, we are selling our place and moving, so I don't need the "don't" conversation. I'm asking whats the fun things to do, secret food areas, good spots, etc.... |

You're in luck, there is quality cheap track time to be had at Arroyo Seco Raceway. The guys that run the ASR Super Lap series are on here as well. Looks like about a 4 hour drive from Albuquerque.
I'll be out there in September for the 2 day Super Lap event. And the other thing you can check out is ProAutoSports they have some events at Inde Motorsports Ranch in Wilcox, AZ which is a REALLY nice track. Looks like about a 6 hour drive from center of Albuquerque. I am in SE NM, so about 5 hours from you and Arroyo Seco. What part of ABQ will you be living in?
The track in ABQ is pretty fun, but it has lots of walls. I much prefer the track near Las Cruces, because there is nothing to hit. There are way more driving opportunities in ABQ, though. |
NM is awesome. More people should realize that so all the damn yuppies quit moving to CO.
Sandia Speedway is 15 minutes out of town and it's a great little track, especially for Miatas. Cheap track time there regularly. You can go cruise down Central with the low riders or meet the biker boyz and stancers at the Sonic. There are lots of cops always roaming the streets so if you want to drive fast you have to leave the city. Unser Museum is there also. Some of the best sushi I've ever had was in Albuquerque believe it or not. And you can get green chili everywhere, literally everywhere, McDs, Subway, Dairy Queen, etc etc all have green chili. |

This is right next to Santa Fe. The wife and I decided there is never a "good time" to move. Since the military isn't paying for it and it's our choice. Doing it now is better than looking for the right time, as that is never. We have no kids, she works, I'm a student again. We aren't tied to anything and only a mother and brother in law left.
Depending on timing I might not make in time for this semester, but in the grand scheme 3 months delay isn't the end of the world. Most of the mechanical engineering jobs I know of around here I think would murder my souless ginger husk of a body. The end goal has been to do something I WANT to do, and anything involving a degree should pay the bills. Thanks for the track info. I feel I'll be waiting until next summer to get back in the funding for that with the moving costs. |

I think this is great! We moved to Texas for 3 years, but I later wanted to be back with family. The fact that you have very little family left is unfortunate, but it should certainly free you to move and be happy there.
And you're right. There is never a perfect time for anything, and all decisions are not based on economics. Duh, we have turbo'ed Miatas. Best of luck to you. |

I have a bunch of clean and half emty oil containers in my garage so the oil wouldn't cost me any extra as I'm not planning on putting it in my Uhaul in fear it leaks around my stuff. So would spare/free oil in a loaded 26ft Uhaul towing a flat trailer and Miata change mileage about 1mpg? Hmmmm Edit: the problem is I'd need a mileage number for that truck before the move which would require driving it around for enough fuel to measure mpg and in turn negating my savings in test costs |
