Feeler - Should I sell my Miata?
6 Attachment(s)
I could use the money right about now..
For those who are unfamiliar, mine is a '93 Greddied 1.6, 240rwhp, all of the suspension, etc. Of course, I won't get out of it nearly what I put into it. There must be 12-13k tied up in it, but since I have a daily now and won't realistically get to drive it like it should be driven until I get back from an upcoming deployment sometime next fall, it's making more and more sense to sell. What say you, MT? Is 6k an unfair asking price? https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...45730840_n-jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...09171395_n-jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...28029651_n-jpg |

I see no problem starting at $6k. Only thing for me is that it's an older Miata, 1.6L.
|
I wouldn't sell it at this point. IMO the fact that it's a 1.6 car is irrelevant, assuming it has a torsen rear end and 1.8 brakes. The 1.6 obviously makes plenty of power and is immaculate otherwise.
It would be a shame if you got less than 6k for it. |
its a shame you are considering this while living in NC, but I agree, you should stay firm on a 6k MINIMUM, but it would be nicer of you found a way to keep it, that is one sexy machine. But I to understand times can get very shitty.
|
Yeah, times are shitty.
I have the option to sell in northern Florida, too, if selling 'round these parts isn't going anywhere. |

Like you, I've debated selling mine for the past 3 years, seeing that it does more sitting than anything.
If you sell it you'll miss it, obviously, but if you need the cash you need the cash. Also, $6k is too low IMHO. |

$6K is a steal.
|
6k is a steal for those of us that own miatas, but for most in the market right now even that's not really anything special. People are unloading sweet cars for pennies these days cause they're broke.
So I see it this way: if you sell it, take a 6k loss, and later miss it and want to do another miata, you're starting fresh down 6k. Or you keep it, get by without the extra cash, and get to enjoy something you put tons of money and time into. Basically I'm not sure its worth taking such a big loss at this point. And no, I don't think 6k is too low. Look at the damn market: anything that isn't dirt cheap is sitting for sale for months/years. |
Such a nice car. I hope you end up keeping it. Like everyone else is saying, it will cost a lot to get back to where you are now. The car is functional, fast and also very pretty.
|
I strongly recommend against this course of action.
Plus, won't you be saving up a bunch of dough while on deployment? Or are you married? (I, of course, was married and my wife would go on punitive spending sprees when I deployed). |

Truth. Where I live (one of the top 10 poorest states in the US) that's still at least a 5-6k car including those mods. I'd still ask 6k at least. While this state is pretty poor, people love spending it on modified cars - so they actually still go for a decent price.

Welp, no longer in a financial bind, but now I have another sporty car so the Miata's going to have to go.
So now the question is: do I start a FS thread while I'm still deployed and have my wife try and seal the deal, or do I wait until I get back, which depending on my boss' boss' mood, could be either next month, July, or September. Decisions.. |

Decisions.. Where is the car located? I'm ready to buy a car with cash in hand and willing to travel so maybe we can make this a quick and easy deal. Im supposed to pick up a car in the Phillidalphia area next weekend (27th-28th) but am questioning the owners motivation to sell. Can you shoot me some interior pics? Thanks Evan |
koto, my experience selling my car was to wait for the buyer to find it, not to wait for it to find a buyer. I kept my eyes peeled for people looking for something similar and shot them a PM or replied to the thread with a "hey I have that car more or less and I'm considering selling. would you consider $XXXX?
And if they are looking, then they are aware of the cost of doing the mods and will appreciate the right car for the right price. Just make sure you get enough for it that you're satisfied even if you don't get what you put into it. At the end of the day, you want to both sell it and feel satisfied with the terms. And satisfaction for me included not getting absolute top dollar if it meant putting in a lot of work to sell the car. |
Keep the miata and beat the living shit out of it. Drive the NSX nicely and keep it pristine.
Or part out the wheels so i can buy them ;) |

Thanks for the advice guys.
I'd love to keep the Miata, but I'm trying to be practical. Well, as practical as a guy who just bought an NSX can be, I guess. Early next year I'll be moving back out to Monterey. The government will pay for the move except for the cars. So given that there are two adults in my household, that leaves my wife and I driving the NSX and VW cross-country. It would cost around $700 minimum to ship the Miata out there based on past experience. And then, once out there, I'll be lucky to have a two-car garage, so just enough space for the VW, NSX, and my bicycles (one of which will be my daily, for those of you who haven't kept up with Joe's Troll the Planet thread). Also, my Miata was built with autox in mind. I really don't want to start down that rabbit hole, and with MRLS in my back yard it'd be very tempting. The NSX is going to be my weekend/track toy instead. Just HPDEs, nothing crazy. I've already ordered a lot of things to prepare it for the track, which will go on in addition to the preparations undertaken by the PO. So I hope to find it a good home. Hopefully a mt.netter. :) |
I wish 6k bought me that in MA ... I'd own more than two.
Part of me is interested since it's a carbon copy of my car. Take two red 1.6 Greddy NA miatas > bolt up the best of each one > sell the lesser of the two for 6.5k in MA :makeout: -Zach |
Can you still get this car to northern Florida? I might consider buying it...
|
I could, but I have a tentative buyer actually. If he falls through I'll let you know.
|
Definitely let me know. The more I think about it the more interested I get and I have cash.
|
Got a deposit on the car already, and I never even had to make an official FS thread, lol.
Thanks, MT! |

The Miata shipped out on Monday. En route to its new owner, a seasoned mt.netter. Which I'm happy about.
I have no regrets about selling, but I will miss the car. You guys, I might be a little biased, but this car was (is...) miataturbo.net. It has a Greddy turbo I bought when I first registered here. Ben and M2CupCar helped me install the Megasquirt. It was tuned by Jerry at DIYautotune. It has Leatherface's transmission. Savington's rear end. Brain's tail light. TSE ignition and brakes. Et cetera... I'm still going to visit even though I'm Miataless. Thanks dudes. |
It's great having you around, and your knowledge will surely remain useful on the forums.
For those that don't know I bought Matt's miata. For the record I don't plan to do much but maintain the car and drive it like it's meant to be driven. Small upgrades where I see fit but nothing major. After all my miata's this one is a keeper. :dealwithit: |
Good, I couldn't bear the thought of it being sold to some fat emo Mexican ricer out there in AZ.. lol.
|
LOL. Instead a skinny white ginger owns it.
|
Oh, you bought this one FRT? Awesome, post up some pics and vids of it in action!
|
I'll definitely do a build thread once I get it. No real plans besides a few small things, and lots of driving.
