Fire extinguishers.

So yea. I decided to add one more thing to my turbo parts list. I figure it would be wise to keep one in the car just in case. You never know what might happen.

I want one thats small, can put out an engine fire, and can mount to the crossmember behind the seats.

I have looked at Halon, and they are expensive extinguishers and I don't need a full fire suppression system. ABC style are bad for car wiring and other various components as I understand. So other then Halon and BC I dont know what else is left.

Anyone wanna give me a recommendation?

Best place for inexpensive fire extinguishers- your local marine supply store. Pick up a 10BC unit with a USGC-approved metal bracket.

Eg:

Personally, I cheaped out and just bought an RV-grade 10BC from ACE Hardware for about $12. I keep it behind the pax seat.

A fuel pump kill switch is also a good cheap add to anti-fire/anti-theft.

I keep two fire extinguishers in my car, behind the driver seat, and one in the trunk.

Halon is about your best option and what I will be going with before the Redline Time Attack in Aug, as it is required for this event.

Halon doesn't make a mess and doesn't hurt the car. An ABC type extinguisher will eat aluminum, plastic, and wire insulation. It will put the fire out, but you may be wishing you would have let it burn and let the insurance company buy you a new one.

^ A halon extinguisher is like 100 bucks. Its quite a bit of money. Besides, my GF wants to get it for my birthday and I don't want her to spend that much.

Whats the difference between Compact - 2-3/4lbs 5-B-C and Mariner 10 - 2-3/4lb - 10-B-C? Concentration of the fire suppression agent?

Is the metal bracket worth it? I want the type of bracket that has two arms that wrap around the bottle and secured with a buckle. I dont want it flying out and hitting me in the back of the head.

I ordered mine from saferacer.com. Pretty cheap and with hardware that fits nicely on my HD harness bar... plus it looks good. The fixation-snap-buckle-wrap-around-english-is-not-my-first-language-thing-fixation works well.

Regarding your Qs: I have no idea, but I really felt like posting something.

any pics of where the location is on your car?

Torkel,
Can you post a picture of this? I am interested in doing something like this.

If it happens on the track insurance isn't going to cover it regardless... if you have to use it on the street and the wiring harness and dash are completely destroyed by the chemicals the insurance company will still total the car. wiring is one of those things they won't even think about trying to repair 90% of the time on a car this old. The extinguisher will just assure that everything but the harness and plastic is usable when you buy the salvage titled car back. I bought the firecharger onboard kit and have no regrets about doing so. It's going in the car in a month or two when work slows down.

Not right now, sorry. I am on a work-trip to the sad little town of Saronno, Italy :jerkit:. I might have pics at home and I'll check when I get back. Car is in Sweden, so I can not take new pics for a while.
