Fix or replace six speed

My six speed has an issue going in 6th gear. It is a mazdaspeed version. It is under warranty from the parts place and I may have the option to have it fixed, or have it completely replaced. What would you do?

What would you do if they wanted to replace it with a non MS 6 spd?

The answer depends on who is doing the work and the reality that you probably won't get an MSM trans back.

Shop is great, I trust them 100%.

Do we have confirmation that MSM trans is superior?

Have you taken the boot off the shifter and check all the bolts under it? 6th is a weird gear to go out.

miatauser884 10-21-2010 12:24 PM

I have not.

It got stuck in 6th twice. The second time, I had to help it out of gear. I have to try twice in rapid succession to get it into gear. It goes in smoothly on the second try. It seems like the synchos aren't completely aligned on the first attempt, and then they are aligned on the second attempt.

Otherwise, shifting is pretty smooth. I did have issues with 5th at the track, but I think that was because I was hitting the reverse gate. Then it seeme dliek I was locked out of fifth occasionaly and it would take a few attempts to get into 5th.

This is why I'm wondering if I should chance a replacement. Are there other issues with this trans that will start to become more apparent. Trans had 60k on it.

Check the actual bushing (or whatever that thing is called) on the bottom of the shifter. If that gets damaged it will show the symptoms that you are describing, at least I've seen a couple that did.

Excellent idea, I will check this when I get home.

My claim has been approved for another six speed. They are waiting for an MS six to become available. Obviously this could take a little while. Should I wait for the MS six, or get a regular six if one is available now????

The car is drivable so waiting is an option.

I would wait, I busted a 99 6-speed. I also replaced it with another 99 6-speed specifically because I needed it fast and I got a good deal from 18psi on it.

If this ever goes out, ill wait untill i find a MS box. In the mean time I am babying my clutch engagements and shifting MUCH slower than I did on my old box. This one feels better than my old one too.
