Forza + Fanatec... freaking wow.

Well I finally got my stuff in from Fanatec. I've been holding off on playing forza until I got this stuff.

Overall it's amazing... the force feedback is dead on. As much as torque steer sucks, I felt a sense of awesomeness actually feeling it in a video game. I only took a few laps around in an integra so can't wait to try out a few more cars. The stand folds up for easy storage too. Although it's pretty heavy, which is good though since it holds up well to quick steering maneuvers. I do however need to work on a better mounting option for the pedals as the brake pedal is stiff and moves the platform a bit.

holy crap that's awesome

FRT_Fun 04-15-2010 06:42 PM

Eventually I will use my original Miata seat, but it's a few hundred miles away from me right now. The old crappy chair will have to do for now.

Vashthestampede 04-15-2010 06:57 PM

Excuse my ignorance, but is this for the PC, 360, or PS3?

It looks cool as fuck whatever its for! :bigtu:

Expensive?

Marc D 04-15-2010 07:06 PM

Nice man.

I have a Logitech G27 wheel which im aching to use with GT5. GT5P will suffice for a while, but it gets boring with only a few tracks to actually run on.

I dont have a nice set up to mount my wheel at this moment, but I have bought some square tubing which will be used to build a cockpit for the wheel.

Going to be using this as a model:

Nice setup BTW!

Holy fuck I want that so bad...

^^I dont even have a PS3 or any good racing games and I want that!

Marc D 04-15-2010 07:21 PM

Its awesome, he also put one of these on.

Basically, im going to be measuring the distance of the pedals, seat, center console, and the steering wheel, then just build it in according to how the miata sits. Still gotta find a seat though, and find time to weld all those tubes up.

I use it for the 360 (Forza). But it is compatible with PC and PS3, unlike the Logitech one. I've actually used the logitech one as well and not nearly impressed as I am with this one.

Yea my setup is noob compared to the one above. I do want to make a custom setup like that eventually, but my home is not big enough atm.

FRT_Fun 04-16-2010 01:45 PM

Soo I bought a Miata today finally, put my mods plus a few extras and wow it's pretty awesome. Can't wait to race it!

Mobius 04-16-2010 01:59 PM

Nice stuff. I have the Logitech G25 setup which I use for GTR2 and for iRacing. I'm not into racing in circles at all, but iRacing's simulation of Laguna Seca is simply awesome. Every track they do is immensely detailed.

Bryce 04-16-2010 02:26 PM

I've had my Fanatech for forever now. It really is the best if you want to play all systems.

I'm not a huge fan of the force feedback in Forza 3 compared to Forza 2. It seems too dull and unexciting.

Have you tried any of the PC games. I've been doodling around with PC simulator trials for awhile now. Which ones do yall like?

PS: Add me on XBL. "Toler Clan"
and PSN. "Bryce900"

Bryce 04-16-2010 02:32 PM

Perfect timing for this thread. I just bought a Mig welder, and this will be my first project.

curly 04-16-2010 02:35 PM

Did I miss the price somewhere?

I paid $350 shipped for mine, had to wait a few months because it was a preorder. Some people waited over a year.

Edit: Just the steering wheel, shifter and pedals. No Wheel stand.

KPLAFIN 04-16-2010 02:38 PM

http://fanatec.com/ Click "Products" click "Renn Sport Cockpit" Drool.

Mobius 04-16-2010 02:39 PM

Mine are PC only. I have GTR2, iRacing, and rFactor. Haven't fired up rFactor in a while, though.

iRacing is the best, IMO, but it's also fairly expensive. It's a subscription model, and you have to pay to unlock tracks and cars. Annual cost for me is less than one track day, so if you look at it that way, it's not expensive at all. Simulation aspects seem dead-on.

GTR2 and the other simulators in this family are pretty good. I have struggled with getting the settings right to make the cars behave as I think they should - ie, to properly replicate power-on push and power-off oversteer in turns. But, GTR2 has all of the cool European tracks, such as Spa, that I will never be able to drive in real life.

You can spend hours noodling with ride heights, damper settings, wing setting, etc etc with these.

There is a new one which may be a viable alternative to iRacing - http://www.real-timeracing.com. I haven't made it into the beta yet, so haven't actually been able to see how it drives. But it will allow you to race against replays of actual drivers on the course. Not a saved hotlap of a virtual driver, but a saved lap of an actual human in a car on that track. They also claim to be able to do that live - have virtual drivers competing against physical cars, which will be interesting. The ability to compare lines to an actual car on the track, though, is what interests me most.

Damn! That thing is awesome, my wife woulf kill me if I had that in the middle of the living room

Oscar 04-16-2010 02:49 PM

I've been using the G25 for LiveForSpeed for a couple of years. Hands down the best racing sim out there. Only a few 'real' cars, no real tracks but I don't care. iRacing, Forza, GTR, rFactor can suck my nuts. It's close, but I just don't feel connected to the cars, even after fiddling with controller settings.

Mobius 04-16-2010 03:02 PM

Ah, cool. I had forgotten about LFS. Checked it out when it was under development, then forgot about it. I'll download that and give it a try again.

Oscar 04-16-2010 03:27 PM

It's still under development. They're working on adding Rockingham to the list, aswell as the new VW Scirocco. Patches and updates are being added still.

cardriverx 04-17-2010 03:17 AM

live for speed is great. Only problem is its like a 3 man dev team, so shit takes foreverrrrrr. Still the best sim out there tho

Bryce 08-31-2010 02:23 AM

I really want a Force Dynamics 301 in my room.

inferno94 08-31-2010 05:24 PM

I miss having a wheel setup. Mine broke mysteriously between uses but it wasn't as nice as OP's.

They definitely make racing games easier / more intuitive, though not as fun with COD.

Edit: Oops accidental necro

FRT_Fun 08-31-2010 05:32 PM

Byrce necro'd it before you ^ :p

I'm still loving the setup. Starcraft and COD have been owning my time lately though. I only play to motivate myself to work on my car.

Holy shit

$45000 though?

I need a better job...

On the other hand for $45000 I can buy a fast car and just track it anyways...

I started by modeling my car (also a red 97) but was dissapointed at how the car held the road too well for the power, almost power slide free. The solution is a single turbo 20b ("R3TT - Mazda 3-Rotor") ~990whp at 7500rpm, 850tq at 4500rpm, that puts the Miata into R3 755pi I believe.

I just finished assassin's creed 2 too easy IMO. I love the way you can indiscriminately kill the city guards and they can do nothing to stop you, though their attempts are funny (reminiscent of a GTA rampage).

Now back to renoing my new basement entertainment haven.

GTRicky 08-31-2010 06:49 PM

AC2 was awesome. I loved jumping off roofs and planting the blades into a gaurds face.

I did get bored and attempted to kill off all of florence. I did the same thing in AC1 and killed off as many people i could in jerusalem. I felt like hitler killing all those jews.

Bryce 08-31-2010 09:10 PM

Hey now, the 301 is only 25,000. Plus, it only weighs 700 lbs.

You can DIY your own using power window motors functioning as servos, but they aren't nearly as fast as the ball/screw actuators used in the commercial models.

I just received a second 911 Turbo S wheel in the mail. My original one has some dead spots where the buttons on the wheel don't work. Coolest part is I get to keep the original one (who wants to pay for shipping back to Germany?) so I can have a friend race too, minus pedals for them.

FRT_Fun 08-31-2010 09:58 PM

^all that work and such a small monitor??? lol

Bryce 09-01-2010 12:33 AM

More resolution and contrast than a projector = win. Also, that rig was built 3 or 4 years ago. I was seriously looking into this yesterday, but the slower response time of the power window motors killed it for me.

FRT_Fun 09-01-2010 08:45 AM

I wonder if there is something better than a power window motor, but not super expensive. Some sort of middle ground. That would be a fun project.

GTRicky 09-01-2010 02:16 PM

If one can be built for a few hundred bucks, I would actually mount my 42" 1080i on it. I would play that more than playing SC2

FRT_Fun 09-01-2010 03:46 PM

I think they said a basic one can be built for around $1000 and takes around a month. Not a bad price at all.

GTRicky 09-01-2010 04:10 PM

it's a shame that the site for the info is down. does anyone have a DIY link or download? all the stuff I've found for the thanos is outdated by 3 years or so.
