Just... What are you? I mean, you had this 2000 Altima that is super clean, yet you drag raced it, autocrossed it, and randomly put too-big of wheels on it that are super retarded, yet you are one of the biggest CR.net hating mofos out there, with your practicality-and purpose-based agruments. I mean, that pic by the ghetto gas station wall. Why does that even exist? Did you think it looked cool? Was it an exceptionally sunny day? Did you like the contrast of the patina on the peeling-paint brick wall from your shiny new Discount Tire Special rimz? Were you admiring the tacky chrome bar across the front of the car? Or did you just get your vanity plate and thought it was cool to advertise that your stock Altima was a stick?
Confused. |
the first time i got rear ended i bought this wheels with tires with the cash since i needed tires anyways. one day i ran into a curb and bent two of them and got the others pictured for 125 and put the sane tires on them.
the pic was taken in 2002 at a carwash after i washed it...i think i have a pic of it covered in bird shit beforehand. i thought the plate was cool during the nissan shift_ marketing campaign. it beat I D351GN that i had on it when i first started art school. at one point i had a stillen exhaust and cold air intake. jealous? my other friends had cars like mustangs and camaros with 500hp... my parents wouldn't let me get the eclipse gsx i wanted. |
LOL at comparing the typical CR car to the DD Altima.

I was mostly just messing around. But not completely. |
I'm going to give you some honest advice. Never buy an old Mercedes, unless it's diesel or you plan on putting a reliable drivetrain in it. Don't ask.
|
Hmm those taxi old school benz were pretty good. THe ones with the double headlights. I remember seeing many with 300k km on them.

LOL @ This thread.. like 98% of the vehicles don't even come close to the OP's "fuel efficient" requirement

Edit: +11 more on the Protege. I have a 2000 ES 1.8L myself, gets about 28mpg and runs like a top with about 240k miles on it. Had to replace the wheel bearings, alternator, A/C Compressor, tires, brakes. Has FAR more get-up-and-go than my GF's 2005 D17 automatic 2 door civic. |
I really want this car so I can swap an SR20DE in it, but the price is about $1000 too high.
!992 Nissan Sentra xe |
Another proponent for the 323 here. My neighbor (who is a 30-year Mazda tech) had one with 420k on it, and he drove it to the point where it would use a quart of oil a day back and forth to work before he sold it. He bought it in 2001 with 220k on it for $300, drove it for 10 years, and sold it for $300.
Mk2 VW's aren't bad cars, but you have to deal with the electrical gremlins on a daily basis. I have an '89 Jetta Carat with the Digifant2 injection system and though it is the stupidest injection system I've ever encountered, it has yet to leave me stranded with 240k on it. Best $400 I ever spent. The key is to get the base-of-the-base model with the least amount of electrical anything. |

Ever given the Mazda Millenia a thought? Comes with a supercharged Miller cycle engine, and is pretty damn nice inside. Gets good gas mileage too for a sedan. I picked mine up for just over 3k which is a little more than the price discussed, but not too much.

The protege version is four door obviously but a bg chassis 323 / protege is light, really cheap to buy and fix and you won't worry about it. The car pictured got 750km / tank (~38mpg imp) with 82 hp and ~650km / tank (~33mpg imp) with 230-240whp. It was fun, decent on gas, reliable (parts familiarity) and as was pointed out about the car another member was driving at the time, gaudy. This car is the reason I'm considering an MS3 for a dd. |

I hope not! Mine has nearly 200K on it. But most of them have the regular KL engine found in the MX-6. Those are pretty reliable.
|
I looked at the Millenia S and yes, they are over my budget.

Guess you got one of the good ones. I was looking at one a few years ago so I went to a forum for them... Pages and pages of "engine blown" threads. A good friend of mine had one that let go at 123k and that is fairly common. At least as common as Saturn 1.9's going pop (friend of mine had one of those pop too) :giggle: |
I think this thread has gone of the track here.. are we looking for something that goes fast or a mpg beater to get you from point a to point b?

I have to ask. I bought an 87 three years ago and it has been great.
I worked on a 90 190E. Needed a rad and grille, which turned into a head gasket. Which was awful. Also the OVP was blown because it's a wear part on this car and can go out for no reason. Couple days of the person driving the car and the fan clutch bearing seized and the fan and pulley sheared off, slicing through the trans cooler lines, serpentine belt, damaging stuff. Fixed that and like 4 days later the trans goes out. So yeah. I'm going to put a V8 in it. But yeah it was fun in the snow. I'd like to think that you could feel the rally heritage. |
Wow, that's rough. Though you have to expect things to be wearing out on 20+ year old car. I've got a 2.3-16 and have regularly been addressing wear items- front struts/mounts, bushings, steering stuff - but nothing has been expensive. About the same as the Miata.

I'm just saying, if you're going to buy one, buy one that has been taken care of. |
I'm in the same boat right now. Looking for a 2nd car to be a DD. Would like a four door for whenever the wifey and I decide to have a little one. I dont want to have a miata part out thread.
I'm looking for a cheap, reliable, RWD car. |

Sir it has always been that way. You're always trading something off. The new vs. Used argument really doesn't make any send. By the time you consider the difference in the cost of insurance, fuel and maintenance costs, not to mention the fact that the BMW would not be under warranty, its just totally a moot point. It's a ridiculous argument and it always has been. Is that a question enthusiasts like us ask themselves? Of course. And we are willing to sacrifice those things to have something more fun/interesting. But it's not the same thing.

I put a 6' ladder in the back of my DD.

http://image.motortrend.com/f/roadte...e-quarters.jpg Everything ford makes now looks like it was designed by Kia and that's NOT a compliment. They seriously need to ditch the eurotrash look and return to building mediocre looking garbage. |

Most customers who come in to the dealership comment about how they love the new direction in Ford's styling. The only vehicles that come under attack are the Flex (by most) and the Escape (by a small minority). Granted, these are people who are looking to buy Fords, but these are also people who have owned other brands in the past. PS that Focus ST is sick. And I think it's good looking. :loser: |
Just ignore him Ed,
No offense to elesjuan, but he literally hates 99.99% of the cars on the road. Wanna hear some real hate? Ask him about Honda :giggle: |

The new ST is a nice performance car. Jeremy loved the last gen of ST when he reviewed it. Meanwhile, Kia is selling a boatload of cars. It would appear that neither Ford nor Kia should use your opinions to redirect their business strategy. |
I'd take a car designed by kia if I ended up with the ford focus ST.

If a cat turd with wheels is "crisp, modern, clean design" I honestly weep for what's yet to come. Their entire lineup is easily the worst looking vehicles I've ever seen.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with Honda. They make GREAT lawnmowers. I dislike honda for 2 reasons; The douchebags that drive them and they fucking suck to work on. Seriously, what dickbag designed the belt tension adjustment on a 7th gen d series civic for example??? A fucking win nut? Seriously?? Oh, what's that? You want to adjust the AC/Alternator belt? Yeah, if you could just go ahead and take the power steering pump off... That would be great. It's funny to me that Ford thinks they're Aston Martin now, or something. Whats that? I can't hear you? "Ford owns Aston Martin..." No, they don't. They don't own Mazda, either. I don't hate 99.99% of cars on the road, just the ones that look like a human turd on wheels. |
