Fun Truck
So here is my question I am planning to get a used(30k or less) truck/suv so I can start to trailer my Miata to the track. But when I want something fun to drive, something that can handle when I am using it as a DD. Here is a list I have so far please let me know what you think and of course give me some suggestions .
Porsche cayenne turbo Ford Lightning Toyota x runner Jeep Grand Cherokee srt8 As you can see my list is small so help me out :noob: |

My bad, I thought the porsche would hurt the bank in the same way. In that case I would go for the svt lightning because they seem to provide cheap thrills (burnout power). On the other hand Toyota makes reliable sh%t despite their recent bad publicity.

Personally I would get a nissan hardbody and put whatever engine in it I wanted (sr2odet would be my personal choice but a 302 is also an easy swap) or boost the ka24de. If you are looking to get new (er) and are willing to spend the cash I would get the Porsche cayenne turbo. I was looking on an x runner forum and there were like 3 threads about exploding (or similar) transmissions, lightnings don't strike me as something fun to drive in anything other than a straight line, and same for the jeep.

Damn, our definitions of "fun truck" are way off.
I picked up a high mileage 1997 Tacoma V6 2WD Extra cab with a 5 spd for $3200. 220 or so hp in a compact 5 spd 2WD pickup is pretty fun. |
+1 on the X5. My dad had a Trail Blazer SS for a few years. That was pretty fun to drive. Didn't like the 4 speed auto though.

I wish the Jeep Grand Cherokee srt8 was stronger in the towing dept.
I learned how to heal toe in my hardbody back in high school. :giggle: |
Am I crazy or has anybody else here noticed that the X5 seems to have some fucked up alignment specs? It seems like every one of them that I see has the rear wheels looking like / \. It has to be at least 3* of negative camber. The thing is, so many of them look that way that I am forced to believe it is some retarded design from the factory, because that's not the type of vehicle that would typically suffer camber gain due to ricer-boy suspension mods. I pulled up behind a soccer mom at a stop light and her X5 had cord showing on the inside of both rear tires while the outsides still had decent tread. WTF.
Assuming you can get a set of tires to last 5,000 miles the X5s seem nice. My old boss had one and it was a comfy ride and plenty quick around town for an SUV. Cayenne turbo probably wouldn't be in my budget for a fun/tow vehicle, but I did see one up at Summit Point a couple weekends ago that a guy was using to trailer his race car. Obviously plenty of power for towing and it looked to have decent interior cargo space. My dad tows his track car with a 96 Tahoe. Those Chevy V8s last a long time and the captain's chairs make longer drives quite comfy. But it is lacking in DD fun factor. |

Trail Blazer SS is now on the top of my list. Not sure about this silly 4speed auto but I am digging the price

VW Treg V10 Diesel. Crazy torque, good mileage, not bad handling and amazing off road / snow.
But it is a tad spendy.... |
Pick up a HMMWV from a Government auction and convert that bitch to bio-diesel. Add turboz and haz fun.
