funny email

I just got an email from the guy I gave my blown engine too:

Hey guy I thought I would drop you a note on the engine you gave me. I found the problem. Each piston had a series of cracks between the grooves and lands( spaces between the ring). I am in the final stages of putting the engine back together. Do know the age of the water pump and timing belt on the engine? Thanks again.
what does this mean to you? don't run 87 oct, 14* timing & 5psi of boost.

miatamania 01-28-2007 02:55 PM

lol...newb ;)

adbradley 01-28-2007 03:18 PM

i love stress cracked pistons...

had an uncle that used to race mini-sprints, ran 250cc 2 stroke engines, melted pistons on a monthly basis... ive seen some pretty fucked up pistons.. the best was the one that melted right in the top and when it came apart all that was left was a hollow cylinder with some rings on it, and the center portion was still atatched to the rod... wish i had pics

Braineack 01-28-2007 03:20 PM

I asked him for pics. That only took one 1st test drive and about 5 seconds in boost to create. ;)

Mouglie 01-28-2007 03:40 PM

how long ago did you do this?

magnamx-5 01-28-2007 03:52 PM

my ring lands where toast damn 5 sec of detonation shouldnt do that you musta done something way wrong on that one.

mxv 01-28-2007 04:02 PM

i have to ask, been wondering a while. what is the reasoning for using cast/forged aluminum for pistons instead of what they make rods out of or somthing? is it the expansion rate or weight or what? seems like pistons are the week link in every engine. a stronger piston gives you soo much more lee way for everything from tuning to revs to longevity.

the day after I first installed the kit and drove it to the exhaust shop.

I gave the engine away and never heard back from the guy, always wondered if it was just rings or not (lost compression on #3)....almost a year later he emailed me.

Atlanta93LE 01-28-2007 05:43 PM

If I had more time, I'd love to be rebuilding my engine...oh well. Sometime in the future, eh?

getsidewaysd1 01-28-2007 05:44 PM

Thats funny

Atlanta93LE 01-28-2007 05:46 PM

Pretty nice of you to give away an engine, regardless of condition.

Braineack 01-28-2007 06:02 PM

it was taking up space....and yeah if i was smart i would have kept it and rebuilt it. i've slapped myself a few times for that.

adbradley 01-28-2007 06:40 PM

no shit, where are the people in my area givin engines away?

Braineack 01-28-2007 07:04 PM

here's the pistons:

Fritch 01-28-2007 07:36 PM

nice

Atlanta93LE 01-28-2007 07:46 PM

whoa.

Mouglie 01-28-2007 07:57 PM

eh, i asked because i read your FAQ and the projects and then i see this thread, made me think "and i'm listening to this guy because?" lol...

would there be anything wrong with driving it to the muffler shop?
i'm planning on doing that after i install my turbo (march)...

Braineack 01-28-2007 08:12 PM

again; I was running 87 octane & 14* static timing. I learned things the hard way. I way too excited and overlooked two vital things.

hustler 01-28-2007 09:33 PM

how much static timing do these cars like with say 8psi? 0 or retard?

Mouglie 01-28-2007 09:41 PM

yeah same thing

Braineack 01-28-2007 09:53 PM

with 93 octane and an IC, I'm retarding to 8* with my Bipes.

You gotta know how us Virginians role by now, Brian...my dad sold his lawn-mower years ago. (There are ads for NoVA in Mexico ;) )

I'm 16° at idle and pull 8° off the top. I dunno how that calculates to total timing and all that jazz.

Newbsauce 01-29-2007 09:52 AM

I like the inclusion of the cat litter in the picture, right on top of the oil.

Braineack 01-29-2007 10:38 AM

what about the big box of matches on top of that so we can start a large oil/coolant fire.

y8s 01-29-2007 10:55 AM

was that also the day the chro-mo flywheel went in??

Braineack 01-29-2007 10:58 AM

sure was. and it's soon to be removed.

speaking of...you available sometime in the next 2 weeks to set my backlash?

Shit happens but it takes obscene shit to take out these motors they are not finicky.

Braineack 01-29-2007 01:19 PM

I'm not saying it had anything to do with a muffler, but:

87 octane fuel
14° base timing - No retarding device
203cc injectors
stock fuel pump
(3-4) 6psi pulls from 2nd to 4th

The final resulting in a billowing stream of brillant white smoke out the tailpipe and loss of compression in #3.

These pics are from my 8th post ever on this board over a year ago.
This was my first timing driving in boost, I didn't know what I was getting myself into. Had I known now, I wouldn't have been so stupid. I'm sure the thing was pinging like a motherfucker and I had no clue, and especially couldn't hear over my open DP. ;)

magnamx-5 01-29-2007 01:22 PM

mine looked exactly the same tried to drive it to a miata guy in louisville but it made so much smoke me and my dad figured id get a ticket so it came home and we yanked the motor. It is sad to see that happen but atleast you know better now.

Braineack 01-29-2007 01:25 PM

I learn the hard way. I don't use Braineack for my handle and tag myself "The Sadim Touch" for nothing ;)

yeah probably. as long as i'm home in time for my bday party on the 10th.

Braineack 01-29-2007 02:07 PM

I dont really need you for two weeks, but in about two weeks I will. ;)

y8s 01-29-2007 02:50 PM

dingus. i mean any day is fine as long as on that day I'm home early.

rappadan 02-20-2007 11:05 PM

i need a motor also, lost lots of compression across the board....

Braineack 02-21-2007 09:19 AM

i told you to be careful!

magnamx-5 02-21-2007 12:01 PM

braineack and i might be able to get you our old pistons
