Lightbulb Garage Build Fall '12

So I've decided to build a 3-4 car garage in my backyard hopefully beginning this fall or sooner. The basics I want/need are room for 3-4 cars and a couple bikes(with engines) 1 bay with a lift, compressor with air tools.

Optionals: Room above for guests to stay, bathroom, ???

My lot is total about .35 acres and an equal rectangle with my back yard being most of the yard, fenced in. I want to put it in the very back left corner of the lot. Back yard is estimated 110ft by 85ft with no trees in proximity to be in the way in the back left corner.

I was hoping some of you had experience in building your own garages and could share some tips or thoughts on things you did that you liked and things you would have done differently. I'm no contractor but I can build, wire and do some light plumbing. If I can afford it I will contract it out, but I dont have to.

Please share you design thought and ideas and dont be afraid to throw up a sketch or 2.

Rob is doing a similar build right now, and documenting it in time-lapse photography: https://www.miataturbo.net/insert-bs-here-4/time-lapse-photography-my-workshop-build-how-do-i-do-64080/
