Gauge oppinions for track use
 

I need some help making a decision....

I picked up a used autometer carbon fiber boost gauge as a package deal with a wideband I picked up the other day. I plan to pick up a water temp and oil temp gauge also.

I know its a track car and I could just buy PS WT and OT and call it a day, but I'm a fan of symmetry and like things to match. It must be an engineer thing.

Do I...

1. Buy matching CF autometer gauges?

or

2. Buy all 3 Prosport gauges using the GB on this forum?


I'm not a huge fan of the CF and don't know how well it will work on track, but the price was right.

The talk about not being able to see the Prosport gauges in bright daylight is rather discouraging also.

Both options will cost about the same money (~$125). I guess the PS would be cheaper if I sold the CF boost gauge.

Might as well sell off the CF gauge and buy up the PS's if your ---- about the matching. Otherwise it will bug the shit out of you every time you look at it.

I need an accurate EGT with a usable range since Greddy ceased production on their EGT for some reason. I hear the prosports aren't accurate.

if you're an engineer you'd want the most accurate gauges, not the pretty ones.

I, who am still without boost (and properly ashamed of it) has added an oil pressure and oil temp gauge to my car. I think oil pressure is more important then water temp, at least if you are already checking the oil temp. But that is just me...

we already have fairly accurate water temp and oil pressure gauges. At least accurate enough to tell you when your day is over before its too late.

Don't bash me, but my car is being SC'd, so EGTs are not a big issue. Accuracy is a very valid point, but hopefully all gauges are accurate at least to +/- 5%, which should be close enough to warn of issues.

I have the factory oil pressure gauge. How accurate is it? I don't know? But I plan on building a failsafe circuit using the output of it. I have put a LED in my gauge cluster that will illuminate if pressure drops below X psi. I need to find out the output of the factory oil pressure sending unit. Hopefully it will be 0-5v and make life easy.

I wasn't going to say anything about prosport since I have no experience with them, but if hustler is right, then I would certainly lean towards the gauges that are more accurate. Use the carbon gauge to offset the cost of whatever you decide to go with.

I've heard from a local that his EGT goes wacko and he doesn't know if its the sensor or the gauge...probably the sensor. EGT is the only one I care about really, aside from that, autometer is just fine for me. I really need an EGT though, and don't know what to buy.

As for the visibility issue with smoked gauges, they're tough to see in my buddy's S4 in the day time with tinted windows, I bet impossible if you cut the roof off...and I'd like to see my gauges on the track regardless of the sun's location or cloud cover.

It uses the same probe as the Greddy which is easily 3X as fast to react as the piece of shit autometer.

I had a greddy in mine, but like a dumbass, didn't remove the probe before welding on the exhaust. The gauge is fine, the probe not so much. Defi is waiting for the turbo to go in.

No it's not. Your coolant temp gauge is but it can be modified to work a little better though it will still work to tell you when you are overheating.

I modified my OPG with a few resistors and a new VDO sending unit, i now have a functional OPG and i'm very happy with it. It doesn't jump like crazy compared to early NA models but it does change pressure from cold to warm and increased load compared to idle.

i just found a new greddy egt on ebay and bought it. I'd at least like all the guages to be the same color if possible. Now I get to live with metric temperatures accross the board.

Westach makes EGT gauges as well. They should be pretty accurate and reliable, they're designed for aircraft.
