I'm thinking I should venture into a new business. And being my own boss for the last 4+yrs, I'd really like to open up a small business of some sort and make a living that way.

I'm great at organizing, planning, negotiating, sales, solving problems, and can type/speak in a very professional and almost legal manner when needed (no this post is not an example), and other similar skills. Obviously I can use a computer/type/have no issue hitting the phones, etc etc..

What kind of business could someone with the above skills open up?
In other words what kind of business can I open up that will put those qualities to use, and make a good living on?

I actually read all of that, lol. I'd say tough it out in real estate, the economy will recover and when it does, it'll pull you along with it and then you can afford to move back out on your own.

I like slowly but surely. Schooling, albeit delayed gratification, is the route I've always favored. Live off school loans for now.

Real estate is realistically the best bang for the buck. Especially in south florida. Even though its very slow right now, deals are still being made. And there is a lot of money to be made.

NEW Broker's License Requirements - Effective July 1, 2008

Be at least 18 years of age
Have high school diploma or GED
Complete and pass the state approved 72 hour Brokers Pre-License course
Hold an active Sales Associate license for 24 months out of the past 5 years
Completed applicable post license education
Submit application to the Division of Real Estate with the appropriate fee
Pass the state exam
Exceptions to the above:
4 year Degree in Real Estate

My father says its a damn easy test anyways.

I'm not in FL anymore, NY now

And I think RE will bounce back but it's hardly "moving" at this point. I do plan on getting my license just to have it for when things to get better, but it won't sustain me now.

How about you find a job/field you like and build experience before going off to start a business? Starting a business because you think you're good at "business" is a recipe for disaster.

Like Atlanta93 said, you are really putting the cart before the horse. You need to find something you thing you would be interested in doing and work under someone else who really knows a lot about that.

atlanta/rharris--i started, owned, ran, managed my own business (3 of them) before. Been self employed since 03. Just that I was in the real estate field which would be something I did on the side right now if anything. Business just isn't steady enough to support myself.

lev--believe me it's my best lead so far, other than my pop's construction...but I've been thinking and I really gotta explore my small biz options first before going back to being someone's employee...helluva transition to go back, but like i said if need be I will to pay the bills

y8s--that's my dream, and i guess everyone's. To ultimately love what you do. Problem is I'm not sure I could swing a hobby into a real income. But I have been trying to think along those lines, just nothing pops up as a realistic idea.


Thanks for the responses guys, please keep the discussion alive. My initial post was really long but gave some of the answers to the questions above...nonetheless keep the opinions/ideas coming!

Well as far as the hobby thing goes, a perfect example is Miatas. Love working on/fixing/driving mine...
So I could get with a fabricator and try and develop parts, or open up a perf shop, maybe be a distributor for parts...
But I don't see any of those really turning a consistent profit. At least not for a long time. I am actually still entertaining ideas, but don't see much coming of it unfortunately.
Fabricating takes lots of R&D = lots of time with no income
Opening a shop = needing someone who's more competent than me since we're
talking customer's cars, but I could def run the place
Distributor = prob most plausible, still will take some time to turn a profit and
whatnot but doable.

As for the trucking biz, hard to get financing now for anything, esp something like a truck (mobile collateral, and expensive). Was very hard to get financed when time's were good, and we ended up paying most of it cash.
And few other obstacles which make it less than ideal.
