Cube life got interesting today at my office, someone phoned in a ******* bomb threat. Office was evacuated for 3 hours while they combed the building to find nothing, fortunately. I work from home most Wednesdays so missed all the fun, had no idea anything was going on until someone on a conference call said they had to drop off due to the building being evacuated. I assumed it was a fire drill, or a poorly maintained UPS setting of the alarms. Oh how wrong I was.

What the **** is wrong with people? I know the internet is serious business but is it really worth going to jail for? Really glad there were no bombs found, I've got a kickass boss and don't really want to look for a new, safer, job. I don't make anywhere near enough money to risk being blown up by a psychopath.

There is a local high school here that had maybe 5 or 6 threats last year, and the second day this year. The guy this year was like 53 and looked like he belonged in a mental hospital.

During my cruise on Nimitz 2 years ago, we had some asswipe throwing chem-lights overboard in the middle of the night. Of course the man-overboard-watch would see them and call it away.

5500 people woken up at 3am to muster on the hangar deck because some dipshit thought it was funny, plus launching the alert helo, and manning the RIB's. It was an unbelievable pain in the ***. He did it about 4 times until a couple chiefs got smart and started hiding out in a couple likely places where he could throw them from.

When they caught the guy, the Captain tried to have him charged with sabotaging the ship since he was taking chemlights from a medical supply station. The rumor was that type of crime still warranted a firing squad at sea. Instead, it was a regular court martial for some lesser crime... the guy is still in the brig somewhere as far as I know.

Turning him over to the 5500 people he woke up every night would be a better punishment. That would really **** me off.

I assumed it was a phone call from one of our many angry customers, instead someone wrote 'bomb' on a refrigerator. There's cameras all over the building but I don't think any that cover the break rooms. It will be interesting to see how this gets handled. I'll have to wander around tomorrow and look for a missing frige.

Had 6 bomb threats over a couple of weeks at the school district I used to work for (and went to school at once upon a time). The first 4 times they had to evacuate 3 schools because an elementary and middle school were near the high school where the threat was called in. After that they just stopped evacuating. On the 6th time they were able to somehow nab the kid. Was some sophomore ESL student. As far as the reason, I can only guess that he got picked on a bunch at this 99% white, somewhat hick school.

When I was in middle school in south texas, someone called in bomb threats at all the local schools, mind you these are towns of a couple thousand with very few officers.

We sat outside for 3 or 4 hours, come to find out when all the cops where dealing with bomb threats they hit 2 banks, and got caught on the third.

Serious question: has this sort of punishment ever actually been meted out aboard a US-flagged ship in peacetime in the modern era?

I know little of maritime law, and while I expect that many ancient regulations are still on the books which permit a ship's captain to hang seamen from the nearest yardarm (or nuclear-powered equivalent), I simultaneously doubt the political feasibility of so doing and long to hear of example of justice actually being carried out in this manner.


Sidebar: during my freshman year in college, we probably had at least 20 false fire alarms per semester in the Sledd/Fletcher dormitory, always late at night, and with an unreasonable percentage of same pulled during finals weeks. While I didn't get to witness it personally, I am to understand that on the last such occurrence the perpetrator was observed in the act, and dealt with... harshly.
