GF Backed into Miata - What do?

I parked behind my girlfriend last night in her driveway, so this morning when she gets up to go to work at 9, she walks past my car, gets in her car, puts her car in reverse, and proceeds to BACK THE FUCK INTO MY CAR! She gets out and doesn't know what to say. She apologizes like crazy, and I know she didn't do it on purpose, but seriously? There was room for her to go around the car, but she clearly didn't even try (I was watching from the window, I expected her to go around). In the 7 seconds it took her to get into her car, she completely forgot mine was there, and she didn't look before backing up.

So anyway, the damage is pretty minor, but something poked a hole in my rear bumper cover (looks like whatever is behind the cover poked through), and the hole around the trunk key has turned inside out and the paint is chipped all around it. There are also some pretty good scuffs. I keep my car pretty nice, so I don't like having holes in it.

What would you guys do to fix it? I don't really feel like paying to have it fixed myself, I can't imagine it's really worth involving insurance, and my girlfriend is still in college so it would be pretty hard for her to afford to fix it. FWIW, she isn't very good at driving in general, and I've been trying to get her to learn how to drive better since we met, but she seems to have no interest. This just proves my point, so maybe I can get her to learn now.

Quality Control Bot 06-24-2011 11:14 AM

First post pics of the GF so we can assess the damage.

Only one thing to do: beat him senseless and tell him to get back in the kitchen where he belongs

fooger03 06-24-2011 11:16 AM

Kick her out / Dump her.

:giggle:

You aren't going to get her to learn to drive any better, she simply doesn't care / she thinks she drives good enough. If you really want her to drive better, take away her cell phone, remove the car stereo, remove the vanity mirror, make sure she never has any makeup stuff in her purse, make her keep her purse in the trunk when she's driving...

fixed that for you

Ummm make her file a claim with her insurance company. My parents did this to me one time and I made them file a claim. Since I wasn't on their policy (I had my own) they paid up to refinish my front bumper.

Bond 06-24-2011 11:24 AM

Just leave it? Now you can use that bumper to rub on people in traffic.

Also, pics of GF to make a realistic assesment of the situation.

skidude 06-24-2011 11:30 AM

I'm not dumping her, since lack of driving skill is her biggest fault. I'll discuss with her after she gets home from work what to do about the bumper.

She's not a distracted driver at all, actually, she just had poor instruction. Her parents aren't confident drivers (especially her mom), and her driving school only really taught them about the speed limit and other boring driving rules.

18psi 06-24-2011 11:31 AM

You could always kill her. That's always an option. Just sayin

Bond 06-24-2011 11:41 AM

This thread needs more TOUGGGEEEE.

phillyb 06-24-2011 11:52 AM

this thread is worthless without pics
and also LOL @ her backing into your car.
congrats

240_to_miata 06-24-2011 11:57 AM

bring your gf to autox / the track. My gf has become such a better driver on the street since she started racing with me.

And if she has no interest in doing that. . . dump her. Then post revenge nudes.

This.

It's like the joke about how there are only two kinds of bikers- those who have gone down, and those who will.

It's a car. It's going to get bumped and dinged again. Do as I do and simply fail to care.

But use it as a lever for kinky sex. Ask if she'll let you be on top for a change, perhaps?

18psi 06-24-2011 12:11 PM

Ask her if she could let you give instead of receive for a change

kotomile 06-24-2011 12:26 PM

My mom did a similar thing when I was in some training in AZ. My parents were watching my Miata and she backed into it with her van (early '00s Astro). Never saw a photo of the damage, but they paid to have it fixed and painted and it looked better when I next saw it than it did when I left it for basic training.

That's no help, I know.

It sounds like you're in it for a finish panel and a bumper cover at least. You can $ave a lot by doing the parts sourcing yourself. Be wary of ebay finish panels as most are fiberglass.

This man speaks the truth. Guilt sex is still sex.

In the end, its just a Miata.

This thread reminds me of a joke.
Why couldn't Helen Keller drive a car?
Because she was a woman.

phillyb 06-24-2011 12:57 PM

why did helen keller's dog kill himself?
you would too if your name was, "sdhfkajshdfashfa"

you don't pay a deductable if you hit someone else and they make a claim against you. only if claiming comprehensive against yourself.

pusha 06-24-2011 01:04 PM

As far as going through your insurance, you'd be a fucking nutter to do that. It won't cost more than what your deducible would in the beginning, but you'll be paying for it down the road. I would avoid going through your insurance company unless you're poor and want to stay poor.

I can't defend female drivers in big diesel trucks in florida.

Torkel 06-25-2011 10:25 AM

Women break their mens cars. It is just a fact. See it as part of the woman-package you buy into and nothing to question. My GF scraped my Miatas wheels and front spolier, bumped our old Volvo into stuff and drove my former car into the garage door. But the worst one: She scraped the side of my BMW less then 2 weeks after I bought it. Damages are actually still there now, 4 years later.

So, be a man about it: Fix it or ignore it, but don't be angry at her, don't ever ask her to pay for it and don't mention it to her again. If she is a real woman she will know how to make it up to you.

FRT_Fun 06-25-2011 11:04 AM

She did it on purpose since you love the car more than her.

Sorry... I naturally mean to write: "woman". :bowrofl:

chpmnsws6 06-25-2011 05:41 PM

Back when mine was still a turbo car, she thought it'd be fun to slide around a corner the way I always did it.... This ended up with a bent rim and a bruised ego for her and LOTS of guilt sex for this guy. It was well worth the stock junk rim.

And neither do the women I date

miatamania 06-26-2011 12:52 AM

Then again, none of mine have ever managed to hit my shit, driving or otherwise.

Thought the current one did total out her Miata few years back. Hmmm, that could get fun.

FRT_Fun 06-26-2011 01:07 AM

What kind of car does the said female drive? and pics or this thread does not deliver.
