The Google homepage is interesting today

http://www.google.com/

I spent a few minutes playing with it

rbluemx6 09-07-2010 01:37 AM

The pac-man one was fun.

NA6C-Guy 09-07-2010 02:03 AM

Mine looks the same as always?

kotomile 09-07-2010 02:29 AM

Mine too, very plain. Though it could be the filter.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-07-2010 02:38 AM

I see it in Chrome and Firefox but not in Internet Exploder.
Dont tell me you guys are using IE...

kotomile 09-07-2010 02:43 AM

No choice ATM, gov't computer.

NA6C-Guy 09-07-2010 02:48 AM

Chrome here, still looks plain. Though with my own picture as the background. Ah, I see now that I removed my image. Pretty cool.

Doppelgänger 09-07-2010 08:00 AM

Pac-Man was awesome...this is pretty fun to play with.

There are just a bunch of balls that form the "Google" and they run away form you mouse when you move it near them.

The "fancy" logos always commemorate something. Buckminster Fuller's buckyball was a couple days ago, trying to figure out what these are for...

Tekel 09-07-2010 09:03 AM

I think this proves google hates apple. On mac safari and firefox it is just the same old google.

Joe Perez 09-07-2010 09:55 AM

No sense singling Google out- everybody hates Apple.

usually if you click on the logo, it takes you to results about the logo.

but...

I know, that's what's so damned odd about this one. I don't think Sep 7 is national "Frustrate the living dogshit out of the user day."

Braineack 09-07-2010 10:43 AM

I'm pretty sure it's to show off HTML5 and JS skillz.

Works on my IE, but if you click they explode more and don't take you anywhere.

turotufas 09-07-2010 02:02 PM

Yeah thats what it was. ;)

I remember that it contracted and expanded, so I thought it was a hoberman.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-07-2010 03:52 PM

Yah I thought it was a buckyball too

I want a big jar full of fullerene, that would pay my tuition and books for a couple years

On the topic of the logo, Google told SearchEngineLand that:

... the logo "is not related to Google's birthday but is fast, fun and interactive, just the way we think search should be." That may imply that something "fast, fun and interactive" will be announced at tomorrow's big search event at Google. I suspect until then, we really won't know the true meaning of this logo.
hrmmmmm

Full_Tilt_Boogie 09-07-2010 05:44 PM

Maybe Google will release an flesh-light user interface device?

just a theory...

rider384 09-07-2010 05:59 PM

This is the best site ever.

Techsalvager 09-07-2010 06:02 PM

works fine on IE8 on win 7 here

Joe Perez 09-09-2010 03:10 PM

Well, the Google main page certainly has changed! It now shifts to results as soon as you start typing, with the resulting becoming refined and updated in real time as you type.

On the down side, it seems to now be very memory and CPU intensive. My poor little 1.2 Ghz Core Solo laptop is straining a bit.

b0ne 09-09-2010 03:27 PM

You can, of course, turn it off in search preferences, which I've done (it's neat but takes too much processing for a mere search).
