Surprised my searches didn't turn up with anything.

Our aging Hitachi is no longer accepting HDMI signals. Our Xbox One and 360 aren't being picked up, but my n64 on composite cables is. I know I'm choosing the input correctly, as I can pull the front HDMI cable out of our Hitachi and plug it into our 19" bedroom tv, and picks up the video and audio signal immediately. So yeah, WTF.

Anyways, it's only 1080 (not sure if i or p), a little thick, and only 41". The spot above the fireplace where we keep it can handle ~70", depending on how thick the case is around the screen. So I was thinking a modest 50-60".

But what brand, and where to buy? I have an extreme dislike of LG, as one of their monitors crapped out on me after a year, and they basically said "**** you".

So other than LG, Overstock.com seems to have some good deals on Vizio and Samsung. And TCL, and Toshiba.

Should I be looking at LED, LCD, or OLED? What resolution? What size?

I bought a Samsung Smart TV recently. I watch Game of Thrones on it regularly.

I recently bought a 61 inch Samsung Backlit LED, and i dont regret anything about it. The colors are super rich, and the blacks are super black... not that blue black that LCD TV's tend to have (like my previous 50 inch Westinghouse TV)
Plus, the LED TV's are capable of having slimmer profiles. Like a mirror on the wall.

But its all preference... from what ive seen, they are all pretty comparable. Just stare at a huge wall of flatscreen TV's and pick the one that looks the best to you personally. lol

From experience, you cant really go wrong with Samsung though. Just a bit pricey compared to others

I think we'll be buying a new TV in the next couple weeks so ditto to Curly's questions.

We've been getting by on a 40" LCD Samsung for the last ~6 years and it still works awesome. I've also had good luck with two separate computer monitors.

So, Samsung?

I gave my wife $1000 from our income tax return this year, and she purchased a new Samsung plasma. Plasma has solved the "burn in" issues they had in the past, and the picture is so sharp it makes my eyes bleed.

I'm not a huge fan of my Samsung plasma. It makes a lot of buzzing electrical noises even when turned off (but still plugged in, obviously). It's a known issue but Samsung says it's normal. Plasmas are energy hogs, too. If I had to do it over again I would go with any name brand LED.

Just got a refurb Samsung 6350 60in a few weeks ago and pretty happy. Colors, brightness, and image are great. TV speakers suck as per usual, but the big receiver/speakers I have make it a mute point. I have yet to find a "Smart TV" that operates apps very quick or well. I picked up a Google Chromecast to try out and controlling everything from phones and tablets is way easier and fun than I thought it would be, and WAY better than most so called smart tv's. Being able to change song on Google music from across the house and the yard is nice. The Chromecast works on anything attached to the Wifi interestingly. It doesn't take data from the source. Just the info it needs to get it itself. That way it doesn't chew through tablet battery. The Samsung will mirror a tablet/phone on it's own, but the lag is terrible. The 6350 and 6300 are the same TV really and the game mode response time is about 30 milliseconds which is pretty damn fast for TV's.

Keep in mind I don't have cable/dish. I only use the TV for games, Netflix, Hulu, and legally downloaded online sourced show/movies.

Just buy whatever Best Buy Dynex model has the best internals. Look up the model numbers online, you can usually find someone who has taken theirs apart to see what's inside.

I'm a huge fan of Samsung, but that's just me. Try and find something that's 1080p instead of i, or if you're a huge resolution freak you can opt for the 4k super high def TV. The higher refresh rate you can find the better, and try to stay with a well known name brand. It's easy to buy something like a Vizio because it's a cheap route to get a huge TV, but the way they're made they can't even be serviced if something goes wrong- the whole TV has to get scrapped and replaced. Hope you find a nice set.

Vizio TVs are awesome for the prices. quit your hatin'. They came into the market when flat screens were full of cheap products from all makes and really built themselves up. Samsungs are incredibly overpriced.

i got screen burn, only because i had the tv well before HD tv was the norm. I believe I bought it in 2007; still works well.

I recently bought a Samsung 6350 series TV (120Hz, Smart TV, no dumb gimmicks) and it's been awesome. It took me 3 tries though because Sears sucks, but $800 OTD for a 55" TV has been awesome. I also won the panel lottery and got a TH01 panel.

Oh yeah, unless if you can find a Panasonic VT plasma from last year, don't bother with plasma. The options are kinda awful.

Also don't buy one of those idiotic curved screens. Just keep an eye on Slickdeals' forums and be ready to pull the trigger or get Amazon to price match (and buy a 5 year warranty for like $80 if that suits your fancy versus $400 from Sears/Worst Buy/etc).

that one looks decent. I like the full array and the active dimming leds.

Mine is edge without dimming and to be honest, the picture is pretty good (people use my pictures settings). It washes out a bit if you're not viewing straight on. We could not have the plasma in that location so getting a new one was a must; the screen handles direct sunlight/reflections VERY well.

i picked up a seiki 39 inch 4k tv very ****** impressed with it. im using primarly as a moniter very hard to get over the difference it makes.
