Got a virus
Got a new virus the other day. It is causing popups on Explorer and Chrome. I tried to run my Malwarebytes but it wouldn't run. The virus apparenly deletes the .exe files for antivirus software.
Tried to reload it and it still can't find the .exe file. Loaded Spybot S&D, ran it and it found several trojans, along with several files that had substituted something else for the .exe files. I thought all was good but still can't load a freshly downloaded copy of Malwarebytes. Every time I load it and try to run it it says mbam.exe (the .exe for malwarebytes) not found. Thoughts? Other malware cleaners to try? |
What about a system restore? Have you tried to restore it back to an earlier date? This worked for me when I got a virus recently. It is in system tools under accessories.

avast!
|
try renaming the file also. i had a problem with one that had a database of all the anti-virus software names saved so it knew what to delete
|
Install Linux. Problem solved forever.
|
I had this and had to get a nerd friend to fix it. It was a serious pain in the as. I had b.exe
|
Can you save the malwarebytes exe under a different name and try again?
|
try safe mode.
|
im waiting for some ------ to come in and say, "you know, if you had a Mac this would have never happened."
|
and what are the pop ups? google is awesome for removing this crap, you need to stop the instance of the virus running and get at it.
a mac is like the MSM of miatas. |
wear a condom next time.

In all seriousness, it's a pretty easy fix if you know what you're doing. Most likely it runs from a startup in the registry. You can usually just wipe out the registry entry from safe mode and then install your virus scanner and have it remove all the files. Your best bet is to use an offline scanner that uses a boot disk, though. That's the simplest method. Second easiest is probably to use Ubuntu or Knoppix Live CD and run the Clam antivirus from there. It's a pretty good free antivirus that works in Linux. You also have the option of doing a repair installation of windows by booting from the windows cd. Problems like this are why I just keep all my files on a separate partition or drive so I can just format windows when it pisses me off and not lose anything.

Hijackthis.
|
hijackthis only creeates a log for us to look at and tell him what to do.
|
at my house and my store i use
zone alarm firewall avast antivirus superantispyware all of those are free too. |
I'm not ignoring you, I'm just trying things. I have tried to reload Malwarebytes to rename mbam.exe to mam.exe but whenever I load it and go in to rename it, it's missing completely. I can't open the setup file to rename it before loading. It only lets me install it.
Going to try to load avast now. |
Malwarebytes is great, i used it yesterday when I got the fake security center pop-up malware thing.
|
live cd with antivirus!!
|
oh yeah i used that too, but for routine i use the above stuff.

Avast and surfing porn for 3 years now without a problem.
hijackthis is good if you want to sit on the various forums, post logs, and run various scripts and fixes all day. It might come to that, or a reinstall if you don't have too much crap to copy. Usually a google with the exact popups you're experiencing will return a solution. If it's a new flavor of virus, it'll probably take a few days or a week but that shit spreads so fast, word will get out and geeks with no lives and the desire to be heroes will be all over it with a solution. ;) Frank |
Loaded avast. Took forever to run. It found one virus. Went back to try to load malwarebytes and it still can't find the .exe file so something is still wrong.
Tried to get back on here with IE. It wouldn't load. Had to get on with Chrome. |
Popups seem to have stopped. Just can't load the Malwarebytes. Restarted IE and it won't work. Chrome seems fine. Oh, well.

Try Kaspersky
Been using it for a long time with absolutely ZERO problems. |
I found out that the reason IE wasn't loading and Chrome was slow was that I had the real time verification on for the avast. As soon as I turned it off everything loaded normal speed. I know that this defeats the purpose of an active antivirus but it was unsuable.
Popups are still gone so I guess all is well. It's my work computer so if it dies again I can call IT. I hesitate to do that, though because his solution to fixing any virus problem is to blow it away and reload everything so I am without a computer for a day which sucks at work. |
Well, I'm sure it will be gone now. Against my better judgement, I went to see our IT guy. I told him that I couldn't get it into safe mode. He told me to force it through msconfig. I told him that, from what I read on the internets, that if you couldn't get it to go through the normal manner to not force it. He said to try it anyway.
Well, I did. After that I couldn't get it to boot under normal, last configuration, nothing. It just apologized and said that something in the hardware of software must have changed. Duh. So, I spent the last three hours of my work day reloading windoz. Tomorrow he gets to spend another eight hours reloading all of my software. Looks like I'm bringing my home laptop so I can at least have internet and webmail email at work tomorrow. I hate doing everything from my BB. |
