Gotta be faster than your friends.

So I just got off the phone with a friend of mine from the coast. He just blew his D16 in his crx and bought a B16 he's swapping in. Another friend of mine had a Roush slowstang with a centripetal SC at 8 PSI no IC. Now he's got a Cobra on 10 pounds with exhaust. Damnit, now I've been outdone. This 11PSI bullshit ain't gonna cut it anymore. I need more booooooooooost. Gonna have to tune it for at least 15 real soon, maybe more.

JimAtFSU 03-03-2009 06:06 PM

You have a stock 99-00 bottom end? Everything else in your sig looks up to the challenge.

Rafa 03-03-2009 06:10 PM

WI time for you ;)

You should buy the WI parts f/s in this forum. You'd have a WI kit and some spares.

patsmx5 03-03-2009 06:11 PM

Yeah stock bottom end. It should be fine, but seeing all these bitches throwing rods recently doesn't instill confidence in one's self when adjusting the MBC. I'm around 270whp right now. Need more. His cobra's gotta be close to 400whp.

JimAtFSU 03-03-2009 06:14 PM

270whp is really good for only 11 psi.

edit:
I thought a little more about it and 270 makes sense. My old setup made about 220 at 11 psi. With a slightly better tune, a much bigger compressor, a 99 head and slightly higher compression, I could definitely see an extra 50 hp.

BenR 03-03-2009 06:22 PM

When you make friends with people that have really fast cars you're going to need to give up the miata.

He is running that HUGE turbo. :giggle:

JimAtFSU 03-03-2009 06:32 PM

Rich friends? I gave up on my dream after my first track day.

I think you can surprise a lot of people with a fast miata, but I would never expect it to be the fastest car unless I was at some kind of cripplefight track day. There's always going to be some guy with an 800hp tube frame car that will show up and embarrass you no matter how fast your street car gets.

240_to_miata 03-03-2009 06:35 PM

when i was in highschool my only goal was to make my 240sx the fastest car in my school. There werent many contenders, just a slightly modded LT1 camaro w/ a 50 shot and a basicly stock b5 s4

By graduation i was faster than both of them!

Joe Perez 03-03-2009 07:19 PM

Where the hell are you kids getting all this money? When I was a senior in HS (and this was only 15 years ago, not exactly the dark ages) I had a beat up old VW Beetle. Which was nice, because probably fewer than half of the kids in my class had cars of any kind. Those that did were mostly domestic beaters of late 60's to early 80's vintage.

patsmx5 03-03-2009 07:26 PM

I'm probably gonna put my 255 in and retune this weekend. Then up the boost to 15. I ran 15 for a day a while back and it was kickass. But I got scared and put it back to 12, then 11. I think I have a factory freak engine. I gave it pure hell back when it was N/A. This motor's spun 7700-7800 50 times at least, and been hit with 100 shot at a dead idle and it never complained before (sans blown HG from aforementioned nitrous problem).

My father owned an auto parts store. Made it very easy to have fast cars. Built my fair share of sleepers :D

i didn't get my license until I was in college and my first car when I was 20. It looked like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...n_multi_01.jpg

It would hit ~65mph going downhill as long as there was no headwind and the starter gave out so I had to roll start it every time. The ladies loved it...

mr_mazda329 03-03-2009 08:31 PM

Pussywagon!!!

Almost identical story here. I got introduced to car modding through autocross, using the rusty shitbox of a civic my parents gave me in college. I paid for parts with a job. That was also the good old early days of the internet when everyone was selling parts at a loss to get market share.

The miata was the first car I bought with a modding plan in mind. Amazing how much I've learned since then.

bryantaylor 03-03-2009 08:59 PM

i had a G35 pull me in the lincoln a while ago. 4.10 gears are going in this weekend.

Worked a shitload... making a shitload

Waiting Tables FTW. Id pull in 100-150 a night in tips at a pizza restaurant. The nights i wasn't waiting tables i was busing them.

Power to weight ratio is still in your favor. 2299lbs/270whp = 8.514 lbs/ HP (99 miata base). 3665lbs/400whp = 9.1625lbs/ hp (03 Cobra). I used the listed curb weights on Edmunds.com.

Hmmmmm. Perhaps it's closer than I thought. Didn't think a cobra was quite that heavy.

Just swap in a torsen and up the boost a little and you shouldn't have any problems.

patsmx5 03-04-2009 04:03 PM

Yeah, it needs a LSD bad. One tire fire in first or second at full throttle. And he just ordered 315 drag radials too... This summer I gotta get an RX7 LSD and get it installed. And something to combat wheel hop. And a built motor. And and and.

I was thinking the same thing.

A stock 03-04 Cobra makes about 380whp. It would be a good run for a Miata making between 230-250whp. With 270+, you should leave him pretty good.

You retard, you went and jinxed it now. Let me know when you start your motor build. :fawk:

Nah, the car loves me. It wouldn't throw a rod after all I've done for it. :giggle: Or perhaps if it was gonna throw a rod you'd think it would have done so already.

i already have a spare engine to build in two months

Keep in mind, cobras were underated HP wise from the facotry. Most have bolt ons that push cobras to 500rwhp pretty easy. If his cobra was stock that's one thing, but a blower pully, tune and a few other bolt on makes a big difference.

Indeed they were underrated. It's a stock cobra with exhaust. No pulley, no tune, etc. Stock with flowmasters.

18psi 03-04-2009 06:23 PM

The crx you have nothing to worry about. b16 crx will do 13's if that, nothing special. That mustang on the other hand, can be quite a contender especially at the drag strip. 400whp in a platform good for drag racing will take a bit of power/driving to beat.

If the mustang steps up his game and doubles his boost or adds nitrous, I really dont see how you can compete, especially with a stock engine.

I have already accepted the fact that I wont be able to compete with my 450+whp wrx/sti/evo buddies for quite some time at the strip or street race, so I'm not too worried about being "the fastest"

WI should definitely help you out....but at that power level I'm really curious what your transmission will have to say:giggle:

Not gonna make enough power to play with the "big boys" with 450+ with a GT25. Get the Miata to 300+ and don't go from a dig, and you might win a few.

swimming108 03-05-2009 11:04 PM

same situation for me too. Only at a lower level, since my friend just picked up a stock 04 350z, and all i need to do to beat that is ecu and turbo.

Good luck to you with that cobra. If he beats you, tell him to race you in something other than a straight line. Perhaps autox.

9671111 03-05-2009 11:49 PM

Glad someone already mentioned power to weight. Otherwise, you can already kill him on the track and with any luck keep up with him on a straight. Why not just put the LSD in and call it a day?

p51hellfire 03-06-2009 12:25 AM

lol i like your sneaky post pat..... You apparently have a spare motor...lol

JimAtFSU 03-06-2009 12:46 AM

The mustangs have us beat on traction and as the speeds rise and air resistance takes over, their higher hp becomes a huge advantage.

I've found that the miata is strongest between 40 and 110. The larger cars that can't be convincingly beat inside that window are going to put a hurting on you at the higher speeds. The fact that they kept up with you through gears 2-4 means they have similar power to weight and the fact that they are heavier means that they a lot more hp. At triple digit speeds, air resistance and raw hp means a lot more than power/weight.

patsmx5 03-06-2009 12:55 AM

Yeah it REALLY needs an LSD. Bad. That will come this summer for sure not matter what. Wish I could do it sooner, but I can't.

And yeah, I got a spare engine. :) See, if I didn't have a spare engine, oil pan, gasket set, and every other little piece that would be needed to change engines, my motor would blow up. But since I'm 100% ready for it to kick the bucket, she holds. Murphy hates me.

p51hellfire 03-06-2009 01:03 AM

lol man do I wish I had a spare 1.8... you know what... how about actually having a 1.8 instead of 1.6 would be nice as well!!!

I wish I had kept it and paid someone to build a turbo kit for it, rather than buy an overpriced car that put me in debt for a decade.

skidude 03-09-2009 09:22 PM

My friends are slow. There are a few fast cars around, but none of them are my friends so I have no real desire to be faster than them. I've got one friend with a bike, so I don't even try on that one, and one friend with a supercharged pickup that is supposedly about the same power/weight as me. I need to race him soon to see how close we actually are.
