there...

lmao

I have a standard reply for CL spammers that goes on and on about how the WHOLE POINT of CL is to provide a LOCAL marketplace. I just copy and paste it, no one ever replies back.

Selling two bikes in the past year made me wanna resort to your style though.

wayne_curr 05-12-2009 05:53 PM

I know, its seriously getting old. Had to rent out a room at my old house a couple years back and had to sift through scam after scam before finally finding a real person.

UrbanSoot 05-12-2009 06:00 PM

im also selling my 350z and had 2 phone calls this morning of same content. used same methodology on callers too. big "FUCK YOU!"

cueball1 05-12-2009 07:51 PM

I don't reply. Replying simply lets them have your personal email address instead of the cl anonymous one. I know you are likely using a throwaway address but it's just not worth the headache to tell them FU.

gospeed81 05-12-2009 09:32 PM

They always ask if it's still available like any normal person with the first email though...so they've already got a reply from your actual email.

Miatamaniac92 05-12-2009 10:13 PM

I always give them the local FBI field office address and tell em to send payment to J E Hoover.

Chris

should actually find out name of top guy at that office and give that name instead ;)

ApexOnYou 05-13-2009 02:40 AM

I was wondering why I didn't get any replies when I emailed a bunch of sellers simply asking if the car was still for sale. Oddly enough I have never had an issue with scammers on CL.

gospeed81 05-13-2009 08:41 AM

There is something on CL worse than scammers: overeager, undereducated buyers.

I never had any problems until I went to sale stereo equipment. Had one guy that was pretty persistant about telling me "He was on his way with a truck and $1000, what was my address" when selling a bike for $1500 once. This guy was nothing compared to the thugs that were calling me telling me they were coming over right now at 11:30pm to pick up $250 in stereo equipment.

Freakin' jerks (several) of them kept calling and being assholes like I was a 24hr WalMart or something, but I couldn't straight up tell them it was sold because the guy that really wanted it and was nice to deal with wanted me to install it for him that weekend.

I would have guys say: "just give me your address dawg, I'll be right over" at an hour both my wife and daughter were in bed. I'd tell them I'd call them tomorrow if other buyer didn't come through, then half of them would call back a half hour later asking what was up.

I almost always prefer to deal with people that can actually write emails and be civil about it, and this caused me to take my phone number out of my email sig.

Interesting how he flat out asks for your paypal. No typical escrow etc etc.

UrbanSoot 05-13-2009 01:27 PM

yeah.. i was wondering about that too. i figured he would email me back saying that paypal didnt work or something like that and that he would send me check :)

gospeed81 05-13-2009 01:29 PM

it looks like he was asking for a "paypal account address," as in your confirmed shipping address.

Check out the Letters Archive, some of those stories are ridiculous.

The one where he makes the scammer write out Harry Potter?

These two are my favorites:

This guy makes the scammer make a carving of his head:
Welcome to the 419 Eater

This guy makes the scammer get a tatoo on his arm:
Welcome to the 419 Eater

A few months ago I wanted to buy a horizontal bandsaw...

Put a WANTED TO BUY ad on Craigslist... Received about 30 replies over the course of three days asking if my saw was still available and if they could buy it... the typical escrow scam.

Ended up telling one of them, "how about this... Send CASH... I'm an escrow service. When I receive CASH you'll get the saw, which I don't have."
